Chapter 6 - The Truth That Took Everything From Him

For three days, Serena Dillard searched for the missing piece.
Not the piece that would hurt Raymond.
Not the piece that would destroy Giselle.
The piece that would finally explain why everything had fallen apart so perfectly.
Because Serena had learned something during her years working beside powerful people.
Big disasters rarely happen because of one mistake.
They happen because someone planned them.
And whoever was behind the collapse of Palmer International had been planning for a long time.
The evidence was everywhere.
The secret transfers.
The altered contracts.
The false reports.
The carefully timed rumors.
Someone had wanted Raymond to lose everything.
But the question remained:
Why?
And why now?
Serena sat in Monica's office, surrounded by documents.
"I still don't understand," Serena said.
Monica looked at the files.
"What part?"
"Everything points to Raymond."
Monica nodded.
"Because Raymond was the easiest person to blame."
Serena looked up.
That sentence stayed with her.
The easiest person to blame.
Because it was true.
Raymond had made himself the perfect target.
He was arrogant.
He was careless.
He had betrayed people.
He had lied.
Everyone already believed he was capable of doing anything.
But Serena knew something others didn't.
Raymond was selfish.
But he wasn't stupid.
He would never intentionally destroy the company he spent his entire life building.
"Someone used his mistakes against him," Serena whispered.
Monica nodded.
"Exactly."
---
That afternoon, Raymond arrived at Monica's office unexpectedly.
Serena immediately became cautious.
"What are you doing here?"
Raymond looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
"I found something."
Monica looked at him.
"What?"
Raymond placed a small folder on the table.
"I checked the internal company records."
Serena crossed her arms.
"You still have access?"
"Not officially."
That answer worried her.
"What did you do?"
Raymond looked down.
"For once, I stopped protecting myself and started looking at the truth."
Nobody spoke.
Then he opened the folder.
Inside were transaction records.
Private communications.
Internal emails.
Monica immediately started reviewing them.
After several minutes, her expression changed.
"What?"
Serena asked.
Monica looked at Raymond.
"You found this where?"
Raymond answered quietly.
"From my former chief financial officer."
Serena froze.
"The person in the security footage?"
Raymond nodded.
"The person I trusted more than anyone."
Monica looked through the documents.
"Why would he do this?"
Raymond laughed bitterly.
"Because I gave him the opportunity."
Serena looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
Raymond sat down.
"For years, I wanted to be the person everyone saw."
"The successful CEO."
"The genius."
"The man who had all the answers."
He looked at the floor.
"So I ignored the people behind me."
Serena said nothing.
Because she understood.
She had been one of those people.
Raymond continued.
"I trusted people who praised me."
"And ignored people who challenged me."
A painful silence filled the room.
Then he looked at Serena.
"Like you."
Those two words were the closest thing to an apology she had ever heard from him.
Not an excuse.
Not a defense.
An admission.
---
The investigation moved quickly after that.
The board reopened every major decision from the last five years.
And slowly, the truth began to appear.
The person behind everything was not Giselle.
It wasn't Serena.
It wasn't even Raymond.
It was Daniel Cross.
Raymond's former financial partner.
The man who had stood beside him during the company's earliest days.
The man who smiled during meetings.
The man who called Raymond his brother.
But behind that friendship was resentment.
Daniel believed Raymond received all the credit while everyone else remained invisible.
So he created a plan.
A perfect plan.
He encouraged Raymond's arrogance.
He encouraged the divorce.
He encouraged Raymond to separate Serena from the company.
Because Daniel knew one thing.
As long as Serena was beside Raymond, Palmer International was protected.
Serena saw the truth immediately.
"He needed me gone."
Monica nodded.
"Yes."
"Because I would have noticed."
"Exactly."
Raymond looked at Serena.
And the realization destroyed him.
The woman he abandoned had been the only person protecting him.
---
Two weeks later, Daniel Cross was arrested.
The media exploded.
The story changed overnight.
The woman everyone called the angry ex-wife became the person who saved the company.
The woman everyone underestimated became the reason thousands of employees kept their jobs.
But Serena didn't care about headlines.
She cared about Hayden.
That was her priority.
Every morning.
Every night.
Every decision.
Her son came first.
---
Raymond's life changed completely.
The mansion was gone.
The luxury cars were gone.
The public image was damaged.
The company no longer belonged only to him.
But strangely...
For the first time in years, Raymond felt free.
Because he no longer had to pretend.
One evening, he visited Serena and Hayden.
He sat beside the baby.
Watching him sleep.
"He looks peaceful."
Serena smiled faintly.
"He is."
Raymond hesitated.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Depends."
He looked at her.
"Do you hate me?"
The question surprised her.
Because it sounded genuine.
Serena thought carefully.
Then answered.
"No."
Raymond looked surprised.
"No?"
"I hated what you did."
A pause.
"But hate keeps people connected."
She looked at Hayden.
"I don't want to spend my life connected to pain."
Those words stayed with him.
Because Serena wasn't forgiving him.
Not yet.
She was releasing herself.
---
Months passed.
Hayden grew stronger.
His tiny body became healthier.
His hospital visits became less frequent.
And Serena slowly rebuilt her life.
She returned to work.
Not for Raymond.
Not for revenge.
For herself.
She created a new financial consulting company using the knowledge she had spent years developing.
This time, her name was on the door.
Not hidden behind someone else's success.
Not introduced as someone's wife.
Just Serena Dillard.
---
One afternoon, Raymond visited her new office.
He looked around.
The walls were filled with awards.
Not his.
Hers.
"You built this quickly."
Serena smiled.
"I built the first one too."
Raymond lowered his eyes.
"I know."
A long silence.
Then he said:
"I don't expect you to forgive me."
Serena looked at him.
"Good."
He nodded.
"But I want you to know something."
"What?"
"I am going to spend the rest of my life making sure Hayden knows his father loves him."
Serena studied him.
She wanted to believe him.
But she had learned something important.
Words were easy.
Actions were everything.
"Then prove it."
Raymond nodded.
"I will."
For the first time, Serena believed he might.
Not because he promised.
Because he finally understood.
---
One year later, Serena stood in her backyard watching Hayden take his first steps.
The little boy laughed as Raymond followed behind him carefully.
Not perfect.
Not forgiven completely.
But present.
And that mattered.
Serena watched them from a distance.
She thought about the woman she used to be.
The woman who believed losing Raymond meant losing everything.
She was wrong.
Losing him was the moment she found herself.
Her phone rang.
It was Monica.
"Are you ready for tomorrow?"
Serena smiled.
"Yes."
"The announcement?"
Serena looked at Hayden.
Then at the life she created.
"Yes."
Because tomorrow wasn't about Raymond.
It wasn't about revenge.
It wasn't about proving anything.
Tomorrow was the day Serena would finally tell the world something she had known all along.
May you like
She was never the woman left behind.
She was the woman who survived.
