Chapter 2 - The Baby He Never Asked About

The silence after Dr. Nora Albright revealed the truth felt heavier than any accusation Serena had ever heard.

Raymond Palmer stood frozen in the hospital hallway.

The man who had walked into the room demanding answers now had none of his own.

His eyes remained fixed on the tiny baby sleeping behind the glass.

His son.

For months, he had imagined this moment differently.

He had imagined Serena begging him to come back.

He had imagined himself walking away as the successful man who had chosen a better future.

He had imagined a wedding filled with cameras, powerful friends, and people congratulating him for making the "right decision."

He never imagined standing inside a hospital, wearing a wedding suit, discovering that the child he almost ignored was the one thing in his life that mattered.

"Raymond," Giselle whispered.

Her voice pulled him back.

He turned slowly.

She looked terrified.

Not because she cared about Hayden.

Not because she cared about Serena.

Because she understood what this meant.

Everything she had planned was collapsing.

"This isn't what happened," Giselle said quickly.

Dr. Albright looked at her calmly.

"Then explain what happened."

Giselle swallowed.

"I never pushed her."

Serena watched her carefully.

There it was.

The first lie.

Not an apology.

Not concern.

A denial.

Raymond looked between them.

"Serena..."

She looked at him.

And for a moment, she remembered the man he used to be.

The man who used to bring her coffee every morning.

The man who held her hand during difficult meetings.

The man who promised that no matter how successful he became, he would never forget the person who believed in him when nobody else did.

But that man was gone.

Or maybe he had never existed.

"Do not say my name like you still know me," Serena said quietly.

Raymond flinched.

The words hurt because they were true.

"I didn't know about the baby."

Serena stared at him.

"Exactly."

The hallway became silent.

"You didn't know because you never asked."

Raymond opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no excuse.

There was no explanation.

Only the uncomfortable truth.

He had spent months fighting for a divorce.

Months building a new life.

Months convincing everyone that Serena was the problem.

But he never once wondered if she was carrying his child.

Not once.

Dr. Albright looked at Raymond.

"Mr. Palmer, Serena was admitted after the incident because she experienced severe complications. She was lucky."

Raymond looked at Serena.

"Lucky?"

His voice cracked.

"She could have died?"

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

Raymond looked at Giselle.

His expression changed.

The woman he had defended for months suddenly looked like a stranger.

"Giselle."

She immediately became defensive.

"Raymond, don't look at me like that."

"Like what?"

"Like I'm the villain."

Serena almost laughed.

Almost.

Because that was exactly what Giselle was afraid of.

Not the damage.

Not the pain.

Being seen.

Giselle stepped closer.

"Serena attacked me first."

Raymond looked confused.

"What?"

"She came after me. She threatened me."

Serena slowly turned.

"I asked you to stop following me."

Giselle's eyes narrowed.

"You were trying to ruin my wedding."

"No."

Serena's voice remained calm.

"You ruined your own wedding when you decided hurting me was easier than facing the truth."

The words landed harder than shouting ever could.

Raymond looked away.

Because somewhere deep inside, he knew Serena was right.

During their marriage, Serena had never been the person who created chaos.

She was the person who cleaned it up.

Every crisis.

Every financial problem.

Every mistake.

She fixed them.

And Raymond had mistaken her silence for weakness.

A nurse suddenly walked toward them.

"Mr. Palmer?"

Raymond turned.

"Yes?"

"There is someone waiting for Ms. Dillard downstairs."

Serena nodded.

"I know."

Raymond frowned.

"Who?"

Serena looked directly at him.

"My attorney."

His face changed.

"Attorney?"

She didn't answer.

Because the answer was already obvious.

This wasn't just about the baby.

This was about everything.

The divorce.

The money.

The company.

The lies.

Raymond stepped closer.

"Serena, what are you doing?"

She looked at him.

The same woman he had called emotional.

The same woman he told everyone was unstable.

The same woman he thought would disappear quietly.

But she wasn't crying.

She wasn't begging.

She wasn't broken.

"I am protecting my son."

Raymond lowered his voice.

"From me?"

Serena paused.

Then she answered honestly.

"From everyone who thinks they can hurt us and walk away."

Those words followed him as Serena walked toward the elevator.

For the first time in his life, Raymond Palmer felt something he hated.

Powerlessness.

The doors closed.

And Serena disappeared.

---

Downstairs, in a private conference room, Serena sat across from her attorney, Monica Hayes.

Monica was one of the few people Serena trusted completely.

Sharp.

Focused.

Impossible to intimidate.

She placed a thick folder on the table.

"I was hoping we wouldn't need this."

Serena looked at the folder.

"We always knew we might."

Monica nodded.

"You were right to save everything."

Inside were years of evidence.

Bank transfers.

Company documents.

Private agreements.

Emails.

Voice recordings.

Everything Raymond thought was hidden.

Monica opened the first file.

"Raymond believes he built Palmer International alone."

Serena looked down.

A painful smile appeared.

"He believes a lot of things."

Monica continued.

"He doesn't know you designed the financial structure that allowed the company to expand."

"He doesn't know you created the risk management systems."

"He doesn't know most of the investors trusted the company because of your work."

Serena remained quiet.

Because she remembered.

The late nights.

The endless spreadsheets.

The meetings nobody knew she attended.

While Raymond stood in front of cameras accepting awards, Serena was behind the scenes keeping everything alive.

And then one day, he decided she was no longer useful.

Monica leaned forward.

"The divorce papers he filed included false financial disclosures."

Serena looked up.

"What?"

"He hid accounts."

Her attorney pushed another document forward.

"Millions of dollars."

Serena stared at the evidence.

For months, Raymond had told everyone she was trying to take his money.

But the truth was different.

He was the one stealing.

Monica closed the folder.

"And now we have something stronger."

Serena looked confused.

"What?"

"The parking garage footage."

A chill went through the room.

"The police have it."

Serena remembered the moment.

The argument.

Giselle following her.

The anger.

The shove.

The fall.

The pain.

The ambulance.

The fear that Hayden might not survive.

Monica spoke carefully.

"Serena, this changes everything."

Serena looked toward the window.

Outside, the city continued moving.

People walking.

Cars driving.

Everyone living normal lives.

But her life had changed forever.

"What happens now?"

Monica answered:

"Now Raymond learns the biggest mistake he ever made."

Serena looked at her.

"And what was that?"

Monica smiled slightly.

"He thought leaving you meant losing a wife."

A pause.

"He doesn't realize he declared war on the woman who built his empire."

---

Upstairs, Raymond stood alone outside the neonatal room.

For the first time, he didn't see a problem.

He didn't see an inconvenience.

He didn't see a responsibility.

He saw a baby.

His baby.

A tiny person who would never understand why his father wasn't there.

Raymond placed his hand against the glass.

His reflection stared back at him.

A successful man.

A wealthy man.

A powerful man.

But suddenly, none of it mattered.

Because he had missed the most important moments.

The pregnancy.

The fear.

The first heartbeat.

The birth.

All because he was too busy proving he had won.

Behind him, Giselle watched.

And something inside her changed.

She realized Raymond was no longer looking at her.

He was looking at Serena.

Not with love.

With regret.

And Giselle knew one thing.

If Serena had survived the pain...

If Serena had the evidence...

If Serena was ready to fight...

Then the wedding she had dreamed about was already over.

She slowly stepped backward.

And for the first time, Giselle Laurent became afraid.

May you like

Because she knew the woman she tried to destroy was no longer asking for justice.

She was coming for the truth.
