Chapter 3 - The Wedding That Fell Apart In A Hospital Hallway

Raymond Palmer had spent his entire adult life learning how to control a room.

Boardrooms.

Press conferences.

Investor meetings.

Luxury events filled with people who smiled because they wanted something from him.

He knew exactly what expression to wear.

When to speak.

When to stay silent.

When to make people believe he was the smartest person in the room.

But standing in the hospital hallway that night, Raymond realized there was one thing he had never learned how to control.

The truth.

And the truth was standing ten feet away from him.

Serena.

The woman he once promised to protect.

The woman he publicly blamed for the failure of their marriage.

The woman he told everyone was "too emotional" to handle his world.

Now she stood there holding their premature son, looking calmer than anyone else in the room.

Raymond hated that.

Not because she looked strong.

Because he finally understood why.

She had been strong all along.

He just never respected it.

"Raymond," Giselle said sharply.

He turned.

"What?"

Her expression was different now.

The confidence was gone.

The elegant smile she wore at every social event had disappeared.

"Can we please leave?"

Raymond stared at her.

"Leave?"

"Yes."

She lowered her voice.

"Your wedding is tomorrow."

The words felt ridiculous.

Tomorrow.

A wedding.

A celebration.

Champagne.

Guests.

Photographers.

A beautiful venue decorated with flowers.

All planned around a lie.

Raymond looked back toward Serena.

"Nothing is happening tomorrow."

Giselle froze.

"What did you say?"

Raymond didn't answer.

And that silence was enough.

Because Giselle understood.

The wedding she had spent months planning was no longer the most important thing in his mind.

For the first time, she wasn't the center of his attention.

And she couldn't handle it.

"You cannot do this to me."

Her voice became louder.

A nurse passing by glanced over.

Raymond immediately lowered his voice.

"Giselle, not here."

"No."

She stepped closer.

"You don't get to suddenly become a father and pretend everything else disappears."

Serena watched silently.

She didn't interrupt.

She didn't need to.

Giselle was revealing herself.

Every word.

Every reaction.

Every selfish instinct.

Raymond looked uncomfortable.

Because he was finally seeing what Serena had seen months earlier.

Giselle loved the version of him that existed in magazines.

The successful CEO.

The wealthy man.

The powerful name.

But she never cared about the broken pieces underneath.

"Raymond," Giselle whispered, "we had a future."

He looked at her.

And Serena noticed something.

There was no anger in his eyes.

Only disappointment.

"Did we?"

Giselle stepped back.

Those two words hurt her more than any accusation.

Because Raymond wasn't defending her anymore.

---

The next morning, the world expected Raymond Palmer's wedding to become the biggest social event of the season.

Luxury magazines had already prepared articles.

Business websites had already written headlines.

"Palmer International CEO Marries The Woman Behind His New Success."

But nobody expected the news that arrived instead.

At 8:00 a.m., guests began arriving at the private estate where the ceremony was supposed to happen.

The flowers were arranged.

The musicians were ready.

The champagne was chilled.

Everything looked perfect.

Except the groom was missing.

By 9:15, whispers had started.

By 10:00, reporters outside the property were asking questions.

By 10:30, Giselle was standing alone in the bridal suite.

Still wearing her wedding dress.

Still surrounded by expensive decorations.

But completely abandoned.

Her phone rang repeatedly.

Her assistant.

Her friends.

The event planner.

Everyone wanted answers.

She ignored them.

Because she wasn't ready to admit the truth.

Raymond wasn't coming.

---

At Saint Vincent Hospital, Serena sat beside Hayden's incubator.

The baby was sleeping.

Peacefully.

For the first time in days, Serena allowed herself to breathe.

A doctor approached.

"How are you feeling today?"

Serena smiled faintly.

"Tired."

The doctor nodded.

"But?"

Serena looked at Hayden.

"But I'm still here."

The doctor smiled.

"That's more important than you realize."

After the doctor left, Serena's phone rang.

It was Monica.

"Good morning."

Serena immediately knew from her tone that something happened.

"What is it?"

Monica paused.

"The wedding didn't happen."

Serena closed her eyes.

Not because she was happy.

Not because she wanted revenge.

Because a part of her still couldn't believe how far everything had gone.

A man she spent ten years loving had destroyed his own future because he refused to face his mistakes.

"Where is Raymond?"

"At the hospital."

Serena looked toward the hallway.

As if she could already feel him coming.

Monica continued.

"And Serena..."

"Yes?"

"There is something else."

"What?"

"The company board is asking for an emergency meeting."

Serena frowned.

"Why?"

"Because investors discovered irregular financial transfers."

Serena already knew.

Raymond had been too confident.

Too careless.

He thought Serena had no power.

He forgot one important detail.

She knew the company better than anyone.

Monica lowered her voice.

"Are you ready for this?"

Serena looked at Hayden.

Then she touched the glass of the incubator.

"I've been ready since the day he thought I was nothing."

---

Two hours later, Raymond entered Serena's hospital room.

This time, he didn't walk in like a CEO.

He walked in like a man who had lost control of his life.

His suit was wrinkled.

His face looked exhausted.

Serena didn't look up.

"What do you want?"

Raymond stopped.

That question hurt.

Because once upon a time, she would have asked:

"Are you okay?"

Now she only wanted to know his purpose.

"I need to talk."

"No."

He looked surprised.

"No?"

"You don't get to walk in whenever you want anymore."

Raymond swallowed.

"Serena..."

She finally looked at him.

"What did you expect?"

His expression softened.

"I made mistakes."

She almost smiled.

Almost.

"Mistakes are forgetting someone's birthday."

Her voice became colder.

"Leaving your pregnant wife alone while planning another wedding is a choice."

Raymond looked down.

Because there was nothing he could say.

"I didn't know."

Serena shook her head.

"That's exactly the problem."

She stood carefully, still recovering.

"You keep saying you didn't know."

A pause.

"But you never ask why you didn't know."

Raymond looked at her.

And for the first time, he had no defense.

Serena continued.

"You were not too busy."

"You were not confused."

"You were not manipulated."

"You chose not to see me."

The words cut deeper than anger.

Because they were true.

Raymond whispered:

"I want to fix this."

Serena stared at him.

"Fix what?"

He looked confused.

"Our marriage."

She looked toward Hayden.

"Our marriage ended when you stopped being my husband."

A long silence followed.

Then she said:

"The only thing left for you to fix is the damage you caused."

Raymond's eyes filled with regret.

But Serena noticed something.

Regret was easy.

Changing was hard.

And she had spent too long accepting apologies without seeing actions.

Before Raymond could respond, the door opened.

Monica entered holding a folder.

Her expression was serious.

"Serena."

She looked at Raymond.

Then back at Serena.

"The board meeting has started."

Raymond frowned.

"What board meeting?"

Monica placed the folder on the table.

"The one where we discuss who actually built Palmer International."

Raymond's face changed.

Because he finally understood.

The hospital wasn't where his problems began.

It was where they were exposed.

Monica opened the folder.

Inside were documents that could destroy everything Raymond believed belonged to him.

And Serena looked at him calmly.

The woman he left behind was finally ready to tell the world the truth.
