Chapter 5 - The Woman He Tried To Destroy

For the first time in years, Serena Dillard woke up without feeling afraid.

Not because everything was fixed.

It wasn't.

Her divorce was still unfinished.

The investigation into Raymond's company was still ongoing.

Giselle was still somewhere outside, waiting for the right moment to strike.

And Serena's body still carried the pain from the night that almost took away her son.

But something had changed.

She was no longer fighting to survive.

She was fighting because she finally understood her own worth.

The morning sunlight entered through the hospital window as Hayden slept peacefully beside her.

Serena watched him for several minutes.

Every breath.

Every small movement.

Every tiny expression.

She thought about everything she had almost lost.

Not just her baby.

Her identity.

Her confidence.

Her belief that she mattered.

For months, Raymond had convinced her that she was lucky to have him.

That she was only valuable because she stood beside him.

But now she understood something.

She had never been standing beside his success.

She had been carrying it.

The door opened quietly.

Serena looked up.

It was Monica.

Her attorney walked inside holding a tablet and several documents.

"I have updates."

Serena immediately knew it wasn't good news.

"What happened?"

Monica placed the documents down.

"Giselle hired a legal team."

Serena wasn't surprised.

"What are they planning?"

Monica hesitated.

"To attack your credibility."

Serena stared at her.

"Of course."

Monica continued.

"They are claiming the parking garage incident was an accident."

Serena looked away.

An accident.

That word.

The word people used when they wanted to make pain disappear.

"She pushed me."

"I know."

"She followed me."

"I know."

"She knew I was pregnant."

Monica nodded.

"I know."

Serena looked back.

"Then why are they doing this?"

Monica answered quietly.

"Because powerful people rarely admit they are wrong."

---

That afternoon, Serena received a call from an unknown number.

Normally, she would have ignored it.

But something made her answer.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice appeared.

Cold.

Controlled.

"You really think you won?"

Serena immediately recognized it.

"Giselle."

A soft laugh came through the phone.

"You always did think you were smarter than everyone."

Serena remained silent.

Giselle continued.

"You know what your problem is?"

Serena looked at Hayden sleeping.

"No."

"You believe being a victim makes you innocent."

Serena's expression hardened.

"I am not a victim."

The silence on the other end lasted a moment.

Then Giselle laughed.

"That is exactly what I mean."

Serena stood slowly.

"What do you want?"

"I want you to understand something."

Giselle's voice became lower.

"Raymond may regret what happened. He may feel guilty. He may even pretend he wants to be a father."

A pause.

"But men like him always return to people who make them feel powerful."

Serena looked at the hospital window.

"And what does that have to do with me?"

Giselle answered:

"Everything."

The call ended.

Serena stood there quietly.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Thinking.

Because Giselle had accidentally revealed something important.

She wasn't trying to protect Raymond.

She was trying to control him.

---

Two days later, Raymond visited the hospital again.

This time, he brought no expensive gifts.

No flowers.

No excuses.

Just himself.

Serena noticed.

"You're learning."

Raymond looked confused.

"What?"

"That showing up matters more than buying things."

The comment hurt because it was true.

During their marriage, Raymond always tried to solve emotional problems with money.

A vacation.

A gift.

A luxury dinner.

Anything except an honest conversation.

He looked toward Hayden.

"How is he?"

"Better."

Raymond nodded.

A small smile appeared.

"He's stronger than I expected."

Serena looked at him.

"He had to be."

The words were simple.

But Raymond felt the meaning behind them.

Because Hayden wasn't the only one who had to be strong.

Serena did too.

Raymond sat down.

"I need to apologize."

Serena didn't answer.

"I know saying sorry doesn't fix anything."

"No."

"I know I hurt you."

She looked at him.

"You destroyed my trust."

He nodded.

"I know."

"You made me feel like I was replaceable."

His eyes lowered.

"I know."

"You let people believe I was the reason our marriage failed."

Raymond swallowed.

"I know."

Serena studied him.

For the first time, Raymond wasn't defending himself.

He was accepting the damage.

But acceptance was only the beginning.

Then he said something she didn't expect.

"I want to help."

Serena frowned.

"Help with what?"

"With Hayden."

A long silence.

Serena looked at their son.

Then at Raymond.

"You don't get to be a father only when it's convenient."

"I know."

"You missed months."

"I know."

"You missed his birth."

His voice broke slightly.

"I know."

Serena looked away.

Because that was the first honest thing he had said.

---

That evening, Raymond returned to his apartment.

But it wasn't the home he once imagined.

The luxury furniture.

The expensive artwork.

The perfect view.

Everything felt empty.

His phone rang.

Giselle.

He stared at the screen.

For several seconds, he considered ignoring it.

Then he answered.

"What?"

There was silence.

Giselle noticed the change in his voice.

"You sound different."

Raymond walked toward the window.

"I am."

"Because of her?"

He didn't respond.

That was enough.

Giselle's tone became sharp.

"You are seriously letting Serena manipulate you?"

Raymond closed his eyes.

"No."

"Then why are you acting like she matters?"

He looked at the city below.

"Because she does."

Those words were the last thing Giselle expected.

"You love her."

Raymond didn't answer.

But silence was an answer.

Giselle's breathing changed.

The woman who always believed she had won finally realized something.

She hadn't stolen Raymond from Serena.

She had only exposed who Raymond really was.

A man who didn't understand what he had until he lost it.

---

The next morning, Serena arrived at her lawyer's office.

Monica was waiting.

But this time, her expression was different.

Serena immediately noticed.

"What happened?"

Monica turned her laptop around.

A news article was open.

The headline made Serena freeze.

"Former Palmer Executive Accused Of Financial Fraud And Company Manipulation."

Serena looked confused.

"That's not from us."

Monica nodded.

"I know."

"Then who released it?"

Monica clicked another file.

A security camera image appeared.

A person entering Raymond's private office late at night.

Serena looked closer.

Then her face changed.

"No."

Monica looked at her.

"What?"

Serena whispered:

"That's impossible."

Because the person in the image was someone Serena never expected.

Someone who had been helping Raymond for years.

Someone who knew every secret.

Someone who could destroy both of them.

Monica looked serious.

"Serena..."

She closed the laptop.

"Your fight with Raymond is not the biggest problem anymore."

Serena looked at her.

"Then what is?"

Monica answered:

"Someone inside his company has been planning this entire collapse."

Serena stared at the documents.

For months, she thought she was fighting against her ex-husband.

But now she realized something much bigger.

Raymond wasn't the only person who had underestimated her.

And whoever was behind this had just made the biggest mistake of their life.

Because Serena Dillard was no longer the woman they abandoned.

May you like

She was the woman who survived.

And she was ready to uncover every lie.
