Chapter 5 - The Fight To Take Back My Life

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I couldn’t.

Because I didn’t want to.

For the first time in months, I wasn’t afraid of the truth.

I was afraid of what would happen if I ignored it.

For years, I had believed the worst thing that could happen to a person was losing someone they loved.

I was wrong.

The worst thing was realizing the person you loved had been standing beside the people destroying you.

I sat at the kitchen table until sunrise.

The same place where Julian and I used to drink coffee together.

The same place where he would smile and say:

“We’re lucky, Clara.”

I used to believe him.

Now I wondered if he ever believed himself.

At 6:30 in the morning, I heard footsteps upstairs.

Julian appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

His face looked exhausted.

He stopped when he saw me sitting there.

“You didn’t sleep.”

I looked at him.

“Neither did you.”

He slowly walked into the kitchen.

“I wanted to talk.”

“I know.”

He pulled out the chair across from me.

But he didn’t sit.

Maybe he finally understood that he no longer had the right to act like everything was normal.

“I heard you talking to Chloe.”

My expression changed.

“You were listening?”

“No.”

He shook his head quickly.

“I woke up when I heard your voice.”

I looked away.

“Did you hear what she said?”

“Yes.”

A heavy silence filled the room.

“Did you believe her?”

Julian hesitated.

That hesitation angered me.

Because after everything...

He was still searching for reasons not to believe.

“She has lied before,” he said.

I stared at him.

“So have you.”

The words hit him.

Good.

Because I needed him to understand something.

This was not about choosing between two women.

This was about him finally facing what he had done.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore,” he whispered.

I stood.

“That’s the problem, Julian.”

He looked at me.

“You spent months believing everyone except me.”

His face tightened.

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

I nodded.

“You were.”

He looked surprised.

Maybe because I didn’t comfort him.

Maybe because for the first time, I wasn’t trying to make him feel better.

“I need you to understand something,” I continued.

“I am not here to punish you.”

He looked at me carefully.

“Then what do you want?”

I took a breath.

“The truth.”

---

Later that morning, I met Rachel again.

This time, I wasn’t the same woman who had walked into her office days before.

That woman was still hoping for an explanation.

This woman wanted answers.

Rachel placed several files on the table.

“I found something else.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Financial transfers between Evelyn and Chloe.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Payments?”

Rachel nodded.

“Large ones.”

“How large?”

She opened the file.

“Enough to prove Chloe wasn’t acting alone.”

I studied the documents.

The transfers started nearly a year ago.

Before Marcus died.

Before Chloe became pregnant.

Before Julian knew anything.

Everything had been planned.

“What about the video?”

Rachel became quiet.

“I’m trying to locate it.”

“Trying?”

She looked at me seriously.

“Clara, if that video exists, Evelyn knows it can destroy her.”

I understood.

And suddenly, I realized something.

A person who had spent a year planning my downfall would not simply hand over evidence against herself.

She would hide it.

Or destroy it.

“Then we need to find it before she does.”

Rachel nodded.

“That’s exactly what I was thinking.”

---

That afternoon, I went to Evelyn’s house.

Not because I expected honesty.

Because I wanted to see fear.

People like Evelyn were good at pretending.

But fear was harder to hide.

She opened the door.

This time, she didn’t look annoyed.

She looked nervous.

Interesting.

“Clara.”

I smiled slightly.

“Evelyn.”

She looked behind me.

“Are you alone?”

I noticed the question.

She wasn’t asking because she cared.

She was checking.

“Why?”

“No reason.”

I stepped inside.

“You seem worried.”

Her expression hardened.

“I don’t know what you think you’re doing.”

I looked around.

The same hallway.

The same place where she had humiliated me.

But something had changed.

I was no longer standing there as a broken wife.

I was standing there as someone who knew the truth.

“I know about the payments.”

Her face froze.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I know Chloe was never just a woman who fell in love with my husband.”

Silence.

“I know you helped her.”

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“You should be careful making accusations.”

I smiled.

“Funny.”

“What?”

“That’s exactly what guilty people say when they realize someone finally sees them.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You think you’re smarter than everyone?”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I think I was too trusting.”

That sentence affected her.

Because it was true.

My weakness had never been intelligence.

It had been believing people deserved the best version of me.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.”

“Actually, I do.”

I looked directly into her eyes.

“I’m dealing with a woman who wanted a perfect family so badly that she destroyed a real one.”

Her expression changed.

“You were never able to give Julian what he needed.”

There it was again.

The same weapon.

My infertility.

The same wound they kept touching.

But this time...

It didn’t break me.

Because I finally understood.

My inability to have children was never the reason my marriage failed.

Julian’s choices were.

“You know what’s interesting?” I said.

Evelyn looked at me.

“You spent so much time convincing everyone I was the problem.”

I stepped closer.

“But the entire time, you were the one destroying everything.”

She looked away.

And I knew.

I had hit the truth.

---

That evening, something unexpected happened.

I received an email.

No name.

No signature.

Only one attachment.

A video file.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

The screen showed Marcus.

Sitting in his office.

He looked tired.

Serious.

Like someone who knew he was running out of time.

My heart stopped.

Because this was not a random recording.

This was a message.

Marcus looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, something happened to me.”

I covered my mouth.

His voice continued.

“I need someone to know the truth.”

The video shook slightly.

Like his hands had been trembling.

“Chloe is not who she pretends to be.”

I froze.

Then Marcus said the words that changed everything.

“She and Evelyn have been planning to replace Clara for months.”

My eyes filled with tears.

Not because I was surprised.

Because hearing it from Marcus confirmed my worst fear.

I had never been paranoid.

I had never imagined things.

I had been betrayed.

Marcus continued.

“They believe Clara is the only thing standing between them and control.”

Then he looked away from the camera.

Like he heard something.

His expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“If anything happens to me…”

The video suddenly glitched.

Then continued.

“Clara needs to know…”

The screen went black.

I stared at the frozen image.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Clara Bennett?”

“Yes?”

“You found Marcus’s video.”

My heart raced.

“Who is this?”

The man ignored my question.

“You need to understand something.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What?”

A pause.

Then:

“Evelyn knows you have it.”

My blood ran cold.

“How?”

Another pause.

Then the man whispered:

“Because she’s already coming for you.”

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

And then I heard it.

A knock on my front door.

Three slow knocks.

Exactly like the day everything changed.

I walked toward the door.

My hand reached for the handle.

And before I opened it, I already knew.

May you like

Whoever was standing outside...

Was not there to apologize.
