Chapter 2 - The Woman Behind My Husband’s Lie

I drove home without remembering the road.
That was the strangest part.
I had driven the same streets for almost ten years. I knew every traffic light, every corner, every shortcut.
But that afternoon, everything looked unfamiliar.
The houses blurred past my window.
The voices on the radio sounded distant.
My hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that my fingers hurt.
But I didn’t cry.
Not yet.
Some part of me was waiting for Julian to call.
For him to say it was all a misunderstanding.
For him to tell me there was an explanation.
Because when you love someone for years, your heart searches for reasons before it accepts reality.
It tries to protect you.
It whispers:
Maybe you misunderstood.
Maybe there’s something you don’t know.
Maybe the person you trusted didn’t really destroy everything.
But deep down, I already knew.
There was no misunderstanding.
There was no innocent explanation.
My husband had been standing inside another woman’s house.
A pregnant woman.
A woman who was supposed to be his best friend’s widow.
And my mother-in-law had known.
That was the part I couldn’t stop thinking about.
Evelyn knew.
She had looked me in the eyes and delivered that sentence like she was announcing the weather.
"The baby belongs to my son."
Not an apology.
Not shame.
Not regret.
Just a statement.
As if my entire marriage was something that could simply be replaced.
---
When I arrived home, the house felt painfully quiet.
Our house.
The place where Julian and I had built our life.
At least, I thought we had.
I placed my keys on the kitchen counter.
The same counter where we had eaten breakfast every morning.
The same counter where Julian had kissed me goodbye that morning.
I looked around.
The photographs on the walls suddenly felt like evidence from another person’s life.
Our wedding picture.
Our anniversary trip.
The vacation where Julian told me I was the only person who truly understood him.
I walked closer to the wedding photo.
I remembered that day so clearly.
Julian had held my hands and promised:
“I choose you. Every day.”
I touched the glass frame.
Then I whispered:
“Did you ever mean it?”
No answer came.
Of course not.
Pictures don’t speak.
They only preserve moments.
Even fake ones.
---
My phone vibrated.
I froze.
For one second, my heart jumped.
Julian.
Maybe he was calling to apologize.
Maybe he finally understood what he had done.
I picked up the phone.
But it wasn’t Julian.
It was a message from Evelyn.
We need to talk. Come over tomorrow. This situation needs to be handled like adults.
I stared at the screen.
Handled.
That word made my stomach turn.
Like this was a business problem.
Like my pain was an inconvenience.
I typed a reply.
Then deleted it.
Typed again.
Deleted again.
Finally, I locked my phone.
Because I realized something important.
For years, I had been trying to prove that I deserved to be loved.
I had been patient.
Understanding.
Forgiving.
But the people who hurt you often become comfortable because they believe you will always forgive them.
They mistake kindness for weakness.
And I was done being predictable.
---
The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.
I barely slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Julian standing in that doorway.
The panic in his face.
The fear.
Not because he had hurt me.
Because he had been caught.
That difference mattered.
I made coffee and sat at the kitchen table.
For the first time in years, I looked at my marriage like an outsider.
I started asking questions.
Questions I should have asked long ago.
Why had Julian suddenly become distant six months earlier?
Why did he start protecting his phone?
Why did he always have excuses to stay late at work?
Why did Evelyn suddenly become obsessed with grandchildren?
Why did Julian become uncomfortable whenever I mentioned Chloe?
The answers were obvious now.
I just refused to see them before.
My phone rang.
This time, it was Julian.
I watched the screen light up.
His name appeared.
My husband.
The man I had loved.
The man who had betrayed me.
I let it ring.
Then again.
And again.
Finally, I answered.
“Clara.”
His voice sounded exhausted.
Almost broken.
Almost.
“I need to explain.”
I closed my eyes.
“Explain what?”
“Everything.”
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“Everything happened before I knew?”
Silence.
That silence told me enough.
“Julian.”
My voice was calm.
“Did you love her?”
“Clara, it wasn’t like that.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Another silence.
Longer this time.
“I care about Chloe.”
My chest tightened.
There it was.
Not an answer.
But enough.
“You care about her.”
“Clara, please listen—”
“No.”
I stood up.
“You listen.”
My voice shook slightly, but I continued.
“I spent years standing beside you. I defended you. I supported you. I believed every promise you made.”
“Clara…”
“And while I was building a life with you, you were building another one behind my back.”
“It was complicated.”
I stopped.
Complicated.
That word.
People always used that word when they wanted to make terrible choices sound reasonable.
“No, Julian.”
I looked out the window.
“It wasn’t complicated.”
“What?”
“You made choices.”
Silence.
“You chose to lie.”
Pause.
“You chose to betray me.”
Another pause.
“You chose her.”
Julian’s breathing became heavier.
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
I almost smiled.
Because that was the cruelest thing he could have said.
People always said they never wanted to hurt someone after they had already done everything possible to destroy them.
“Then why did you?”
He had no answer.
I ended the call.
---
That afternoon, I went to see my lawyer.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I needed protection.
I had spent years helping Julian build his career.
When we first met, he was struggling.
He had student loans.
A small apartment.
No confidence.
I believed in him.
I encouraged him.
I helped him build the company that eventually became successful.
But after seeing Evelyn’s expression yesterday, I realized something.
They were not just taking my husband.
They were taking my entire life.
I needed to know where I stood.
The lawyer, Rachel Morgan, listened quietly as I explained everything.
She didn’t interrupt.
She didn’t judge.
When I finished, she folded her hands.
“Clara, I need to ask you something.”
“What?”
“Do you want to save your marriage?”
The question surprised me.
Months ago, the answer would have been immediate.
Yes.
Of course.
But now...
I looked down at my wedding ring.
A symbol that suddenly felt heavier than gold.
“No.”
Rachel studied my face.
“Are you sure?”
I nodded.
“For the first time in a long time.”
She opened a folder.
“Then we need to start protecting your future.”
---
That evening, Julian came home.
I knew he would.
Men like Julian always returned when they realized they might actually lose something.
I was sitting in the living room when I heard his key in the door.
He walked inside slowly.
His eyes looked tired.
He looked smaller somehow.
“Clara.”
I didn’t answer.
He stepped closer.
“I know you’re angry.”
I looked at him.
“Angry?”
He stopped.
I stood.
“Julian, you keep calling this anger because anger sounds temporary.”
My voice became stronger.
“But this isn’t anger.”
“What is it?”
“Disappointment.”
Those words hurt him.
I saw it.
Good.
Because for once, I wanted him to feel something.
“I trusted you.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
I shook my head.
“If you knew, you would understand that you didn’t just betray my marriage.”
I pointed around the room.
“You betrayed the person who stood beside you when nobody else believed in you.”
Julian looked away.
“I made a mistake.”
I stared at him.
“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary.”
My voice lowered.
“A mistake is saying the wrong thing during an argument.”
I stepped closer.
“What you did was a decision.”
His eyes filled with regret.
But regret came too late.
Then he said the one thing I never expected.
“Chloe isn’t the only reason.”
I froze.
“What does that mean?”
Julian looked terrified.
Like he had accidentally opened a door he couldn’t close.
“There are things you don’t know about Chloe.”
My heartbeat changed.
“What things?”
He hesitated.
And that hesitation told me something.
The woman I thought was the victim...
Maybe she wasn’t.
Julian reached into his pocket.
He pulled out his phone.
“I found something.”
He looked at me.
“Something Chloe never wanted anyone to see.”
My hands went cold.
“What is it?”
Julian unlocked the phone.
Then turned the screen toward me.
And the moment I saw the message displayed there...
I realized the betrayal was far bigger than I imagined.
May you like
Because Chloe had not just been hiding a pregnancy.
She had been hiding a plan.
