Chapter 4 - The Truth Hidden Beneath Years of Deception

The room suddenly felt smaller.
I could hear my own heartbeat.
Everything Rachel had just said kept repeating in my mind.
Chloe’s pregnancy was never supposed to save her marriage.
It was supposed to destroy yours.
I looked at Rachel.
A stranger who had walked into my home carrying pieces of a truth that my own husband had hidden from me.
“Who are you?” I asked.
Rachel took a slow breath.
“My name is Rachel Ellis. I worked with Marcus.”
Julian stood beside her, his expression tense.
“She was Marcus’s accountant.”
I turned toward him.
“And you knew she knew all of this?”
Julian hesitated.
That hesitation hurt.
Again.
Every time I thought I had discovered the deepest betrayal, another layer appeared underneath.
“I found out yesterday,” he said.
“After you showed me the message?”
“Yes.”
I looked away.
Because I was exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
It felt like my entire life had become a puzzle where everyone else had pieces except me.
Rachel stepped forward.
“Clara, I know this is a lot.”
“A lot?”
My voice cracked.
“My husband cheated on me. My mother-in-law helped him. Another woman is carrying his child. And now you’re telling me there was a plan behind it?”
Rachel lowered her eyes.
“I know how impossible it sounds.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“What’s impossible is that so many people knew the truth while I was living inside a lie.”
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
---
Rachel sat down at the kitchen table.
The same table where Julian and I had eaten dinner every night.
The same table where we had talked about our future.
Funny how quickly a place could change.
A home could become a crime scene.
A memory could become evidence.
Rachel opened a folder she had brought with her.
Inside were documents.
Emails.
Financial records.
Messages.
My stomach tightened.
“What is all of this?”
Rachel looked at Julian.
Then at me.
“Before Marcus died, he discovered Chloe had been moving money from their accounts.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“She had been secretly transferring money for almost a year.”
Julian looked shocked.
“I thought Marcus was wealthy because of his investments.”
Rachel nodded.
“He was.”
She placed a document on the table.
“But someone was slowly draining him.”
I stared at the papers.
The numbers.
The dates.
The transactions.
It was all there.
“She wasn’t grieving,” Rachel said quietly.
“She was protecting herself.”
I felt a cold wave move through me.
Because I remembered Chloe’s face.
The day I visited her after Marcus died.
She had cried.
She had held my hand.
She had said:
“I don’t know how I’ll survive without him.”
I had hugged her.
I had told her she was not alone.
I had defended her when some people questioned how quickly she seemed to recover.
And now...
I wondered if every tear had been fake.
---
“Why Julian?” I asked.
Everyone became quiet.
I looked at my husband.
“Why him?”
Julian looked down.
“I don’t know.”
But I knew.
Maybe he didn’t want to admit it.
“She needed someone.”
My voice was low.
“Someone who was already emotionally available.”
Julian looked at me.
I continued.
“She knew you were vulnerable because Marcus was your best friend.”
“That’s not true.”
“Isn’t it?”
He didn’t answer.
I stood.
“Your best friend died.”
Julian’s expression changed.
“You felt guilty.”
Silence.
“You wanted to save the person he left behind.”
Julian closed his eyes.
Because I was right.
Chloe had not just chosen him.
She had studied him.
She knew exactly which wound to touch.
The guilt.
The responsibility.
The need to feel like a hero.
And Julian had fallen into the trap.
---
Rachel showed me another document.
“This is the part Marcus discovered before he died.”
I looked at the paper.
My eyes scanned the words.
Then stopped.
A name.
My name.
Clara Bennett.
My heart dropped.
“Why is my name here?”
Rachel looked uncomfortable.
“Because Chloe mentioned you.”
“Mentioned me where?”
Rachel hesitated.
“In messages between her and someone else.”
The room went completely silent.
“Someone else?”
Rachel nodded.
“Someone helping her.”
Julian stepped closer.
“Who?”
Rachel looked at him.
“Your mother.”
The words hit like a physical blow.
Even though I already suspected it.
Hearing it confirmed was different.
Evelyn.
My mother-in-law.
The woman who had sat across from me at holidays.
The woman who had hugged me.
The woman who once told me:
“You’re the daughter I never had.”
All those memories suddenly felt poisoned.
“How long?”
Rachel answered quietly.
“Almost a year.”
A year.
They had been planning.
Watching.
Waiting.
While I cooked meals.
While I celebrated birthdays.
While I believed I was surrounded by family.
---
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
I sat alone in the living room.
The house was dark.
Julian was upstairs.
I knew he wanted to talk.
But I couldn’t.
Because every time he spoke, I heard another lie.
I looked at my wedding ring.
Ten years.
Ten years of memories.
Ten years of believing I had found my person.
I thought about the woman I had been.
The woman who apologized even when she was hurt.
The woman who stayed quiet to avoid conflict.
The woman who convinced herself love meant patience.
But maybe I had confused love with sacrifice.
Maybe I had spent years proving my loyalty to people who were never protecting me.
---
At 2:13 in the morning, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?”
For a few seconds, there was silence.
Then a woman’s voice.
Soft.
Shaking.
“Clara?”
I sat up.
“Who is this?”
The woman took a breath.
“It’s Chloe.”
My entire body went still.
“What do you want?”
“I need to tell you the truth.”
I almost laughed.
“The truth?”
My voice was bitter.
“You should have thought about that before sleeping with my husband.”
A pause.
Then Chloe said something unexpected.
“I never wanted Julian.”
I froze.
“What?”
“I never loved him.”
The room went silent.
I gripped the phone tighter.
“Then why?”
Her voice cracked.
“Because Evelyn promised me everything.”
My stomach tightened.
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
“What did she promise?”
Chloe started crying.
But this time...
I wasn’t sure if it was real.
“She said Julian would leave you.”
I closed my eyes.
“And then?”
“She said after the divorce, you would have nothing.”
My breathing stopped.
“Why?”
“Because Evelyn believed you were the only thing stopping Julian from becoming the man she wanted him to be.”
I stood up.
My hands trembling.
“What does that mean?”
Chloe whispered:
“She wanted control of everything.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
The marriage.
The company.
The money.
The family.
It was never just about a baby.
It was about power.
Then Chloe said the sentence that changed everything.
“Clara…”
“Yes?”
“There is something else.”
I waited.
“Marcus didn’t die naturally.”
The phone almost slipped from my hand.
“What did you say?”
“I found something after he died.”
My heart raced.
“What?”
“A video.”
My voice became a whisper.
“What video?”
Chloe started crying harder.
“A video Marcus recorded the night before he died.”
The world seemed to stop.
Because if Marcus had recorded something...
Then maybe he had known.
Maybe he had seen everything coming.
And maybe...
Maybe he had left behind the one thing that could finally destroy the people who had destroyed me.
“Where is the video?” I asked.
Chloe went silent.
Then she whispered:
“Evelyn has it.”
The call ended.
I stood in the darkness, holding my phone.
For the first time in weeks...
I didn’t feel broken.
I felt something else.
Determination.
Because now I knew the truth.
This wasn’t a story about a husband who cheated.
It was a story about people who thought they could erase me.
But they made one mistake.
They underestimated the woman they betrayed.
And tomorrow...
May you like
I was going to find that video.
No matter what it cost.
