Chapter 3 - The Family Who Chose Her Over Me

The message on Julian’s phone was only a few words.
But those few words changed the entire story.
I stared at the screen.
My hands were cold.
My mind refused to process what I was seeing.
The message was from Chloe.
“Don’t worry. Once the baby is born, Evelyn will make sure Clara is gone for good. You promised me this would happen.”
For several seconds, I didn’t breathe.
I looked at Julian.
Then back at the phone.
Then at Julian again.
“Explain.”
My voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Julian swallowed.
“I found that message yesterday.”
“Yesterday?”
“Yes.”
“And you still went there?”
His face changed.
“I didn’t know what to do.”
I laughed softly.
It wasn’t happiness.
It wasn’t amusement.
It was the sound of someone finally understanding how badly they had been betrayed.
“You didn’t know what to do?”
I shook my head.
“You knew exactly what to do when you were hiding an affair.”
“Clara—”
“You knew exactly what to do when you lied to my face.”
I pointed at the phone.
“But now that you realize she might have been using you, suddenly you don’t know what to do?”
Julian looked down.
Because he knew I was right.
And that was the worst part.
He had not come home because he suddenly realized he had destroyed me.
He had come home because he was afraid Chloe had betrayed him too.
I looked at the man standing in front of me.
The man I had married.
The man I had defended.
The man I had believed was my safe place.
And for the first time, I wondered if I had ever truly known him.
---
“Tell me everything.”
Julian looked confused.
“What?”
“Everything.”
I sat down.
“I want the truth. Not pieces. Not excuses. Not another version designed to make you look better.”
He stood there silently.
Then finally, he sat across from me.
And he started talking.
---
It began eight months earlier.
That was when Julian said Chloe started contacting him more often.
At first, he claimed it was innocent.
She was grieving.
She needed someone who understood Marcus.
And because Marcus had been his best friend, Julian felt responsible.
“I thought I was helping her,” he said.
I looked at him.
“You were helping her?”
He flinched.
“I know how it sounds.”
“No.”
My voice was steady.
“You know how it sounds because you know it was wrong.”
He looked away.
“Keep going.”
Julian admitted that Chloe started telling him how lonely she was.
How nobody understood her.
How Marcus’s death had left her feeling empty.
“She said I was the only person who cared.”
I almost smiled.
Because that was always how manipulation started.
Someone made you feel needed.
Special.
Important.
Until you crossed a line you could never uncross.
“When did it become more?” I asked.
Julian was silent.
Too long.
“Julian.”
His eyes met mine.
“Four months ago.”
Four months.
I repeated the number in my head.
Four months of lies.
Four months of him coming home and kissing me while carrying someone else’s secret.
Four months of pretending.
I felt sick.
“When did you find out she was pregnant?”
“Two months ago.”
My chest tightened.
“So while I was sitting beside you every night…”
“I know.”
“No.”
I looked directly at him.
“You don’t.”
My voice cracked slightly.
“Because you got to leave the room after every lie. You got to sleep. You got to wake up and continue your life.”
I touched my chest.
“I had no idea my entire marriage was already collapsing.”
Julian looked devastated.
But I couldn’t let myself feel sorry for him.
Not anymore.
---
The next morning, I went back to the house where everything started.
Not because I wanted answers.
Because I wanted to see the truth with my own eyes.
Julian begged me not to go alone.
“I should come with you.”
“No.”
“Clara.”
I looked at him.
“You already chose sides once.”
He became quiet.
“And I need to know what they say when they think I’m not there.”
I drove to Evelyn’s house.
The same place where my marriage had been destroyed.
The same place where Chloe had stood behind my husband.
The same place where my mother-in-law had looked at me like I was an obstacle.
I knocked.
Evelyn opened the door.
The moment she saw me, her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Annoyance.
Like my presence was inconvenient.
“Clara.”
“Evelyn.”
She looked behind me.
“Where is Julian?”
I noticed something.
She wasn’t asking if I was okay.
She wasn’t asking why I was there.
Her first concern was Julian.
“I came to talk.”
She sighed.
“About what?”
I stared at her.
“About the fact that you knew.”
Her face remained calm.
“Knew what?”
“About Chloe and Julian.”
For the first time, something flickered in her eyes.
A small reaction.
But I saw it.
“You’re misunderstanding the situation.”
“No.”
I stepped inside.
“I’m finally understanding it.”
Evelyn closed the door.
“You need to be careful, Clara.”
The warning surprised me.
Not because she threatened me.
Because she sounded confident.
“You have spent years trying to hold onto a marriage that was never giving you what you wanted.”
I stared at her.
“What I wanted?”
She walked toward the kitchen.
“A family.”
The word hit me.
Because she knew exactly where to hurt me.
“You always knew I struggled with fertility.”
“Yes.”
“And you used that against me.”
She didn’t deny it.
That was worse.
“You have to understand reality.”
She poured herself water.
“Julian has a responsibility.”
“A responsibility to betray me?”
“A responsibility to continue the family.”
I looked at her.
“You don’t hear yourself, do you?”
She turned.
“What?”
“You’re talking about a child like he’s an inheritance.”
Her expression hardened.
“He is my grandson.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“He is a baby. A human being. Not a replacement for the wife your son failed to appreciate.”
Her jaw tightened.
Then she said something I would never forget.
“You should have known your place.”
The room went silent.
My place.
That was what she thought.
That after years of marriage, my place was simply whatever role they needed me to fill.
A wife when Julian needed support.
A servant when the family needed help.
A problem when they wanted a child.
I took a slow breath.
“Did Chloe ask you to help remove me?”
Evelyn didn’t answer.
But her silence was enough.
I turned toward the door.
Before I left, I stopped.
“You know what’s interesting?”
She looked at me.
“For years, I thought I was the woman who couldn’t give this family what it needed.”
I smiled sadly.
“But now I realize something.”
I opened the door.
“I was the only person in this family who actually knew what loyalty meant.”
---
That evening, something unexpected happened.
Julian came home early.
But he wasn’t alone.
He brought someone with him.
A woman.
Older.
Nervous.
Someone I had never seen before.
“Clara,” Julian said.
“This is Rachel.”
The woman looked at me with guilt in her eyes.
“I think you need to know what really happened the night Marcus died.”
I froze.
Marcus.
Chloe’s husband.
“What does that have to do with this?”
Rachel looked at Julian.
Then at me.
“Everything.”
She took a deep breath.
“Because Marcus didn’t die knowing about an affair.”
I stared.
“What?”
Rachel lowered her voice.
“He died after discovering Chloe was planning something.”
My heart started pounding.
“Planning what?”
Rachel looked at me.
“The baby.”
A chill went through my body.
“What about the baby?”
Rachel’s next words changed everything.
“Chloe’s pregnancy was never supposed to save her marriage.”
She paused.
“It was supposed to destroy yours.”
I felt the room spinning.
Because suddenly, the question was no longer:
Why did my husband betray me?
The question was:
May you like
How long had everyone been planning my downfall?
And the answer was hidden inside the truth about Marcus’s final days.
