Chapter 6 - The Betrayal Hidden Behind a Family Smile

Damian Costa had faced enemies who pointed guns at his head.

He had faced men who promised to destroy everything he built.

He had walked into rooms knowing everyone inside wanted him dead.

But nothing prepared him for the pain of hearing the truth from someone he loved.

His own sister.

The person who had held Leo the day he was born.

The person who had stood beside Damian when their parents died.

The person who always told him:

"Family is the only thing that matters."

Now Damian wondered if those words had ever been real.

He stood in the hospital hallway, phone pressed against his ear.

On the other side was Isabella Costa.

His younger sister.

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"Damian?"

He didn't answer.

"Are you there?"

Finally, he spoke.

"Why did you call?"

A small silence followed.

"I wanted to hear Leo was okay."

Damian looked through the glass window.

His son was sleeping.

Maya sat beside him, watching the monitor carefully.

"He almost died."

Isabella's breathing changed.

Only slightly.

But Damian noticed.

"You know something."

The silence became heavier.

"Damian..."

"Answer me."

His voice was quiet.

But dangerous.

"Do you know something?"

Isabella didn't respond immediately.

And that hesitation was enough.

For twenty years, Damian had learned how to read people.

A nervous enemy.

A lying partner.

A frightened witness.

Silence always revealed more than words.

Finally, Isabella whispered:

"I never wanted this."

Damian closed his eyes.

Those words hurt more than an admission.

Because they sounded like guilt.

"You never wanted what?"

No answer.

"Isabella."

His voice became colder.

"What did you do?"

A long pause.

Then:

"I made a mistake."

Damian felt his hand tighten around the phone.

"A mistake?"

His eyes moved toward Leo.

"My son almost died."

"I didn't know Victor would go that far."

The hallway disappeared.

Damian heard only one sentence.

Victor.

She knew Victor.

She knew about the attack.

"You knew him."

Silence.

"How long?"

"Damian..."

"How long?"

His voice echoed through the empty hallway.

Finally, Isabella answered.

"Six months."

Damian felt something break inside him.

Six months.

Six months of lies.

Six months of smiling at family dinners.

Six months of watching Leo play while knowing something dangerous was happening.

"Why?"

His question was almost a whisper.

"Why would you do this?"

Isabella's voice cracked.

"Because I was trying to save you."

Damian froze.

"Save me?"

"You don't understand."

A bitter laugh escaped him.

"No. I understand perfectly."

"No, you don't!"

For the first time, Isabella raised her voice.

"You think leaving that life behind made you safe?"

Damian remained silent.

"It didn't."

Her voice shook.

"You became weak."

The word hit him.

Weak.

The same word Marco used.

The same belief everyone from his old world carried.

That love made him vulnerable.

That becoming a father made him soft.

"You wanted me back."

"No."

Isabella answered quickly.

"I wanted my brother back."

Damian looked away.

"My brother used to be feared."

A pause.

"Now everyone sees you as someone they can hurt."

Damian's expression hardened.

"And you decided to hurt my son to prove that?"

"I didn't know Leo would be involved."

Again.

The same excuse.

The same useless excuse.

Damian whispered:

"You all keep saying that."

---

Inside the room, Maya watched Damian from a distance.

She couldn't hear the conversation.

But she could see his face.

And she understood something.

This wasn't anger.

Anger was easy for Damian.

This was heartbreak.

The kind that came when someone you trusted destroyed something you believed was unbreakable.

Leo slowly opened his eyes.

"Maya?"

She immediately moved closer.

"I'm here."

The little boy looked toward the door.

"Where's Papa?"

"He's talking."

Leo became quiet.

Then asked:

"Is he sad?"

Maya looked at him.

Children noticed things adults tried to hide.

"Yes."

Leo looked at the sleeping ceiling.

"Papa gets sad when he thinks nobody sees."

Maya felt her heart tighten.

Because that was exactly what she had noticed.

Damian Costa was surrounded by hundreds of people.

But somehow...

he was alone.

---

The call ended ten minutes later.

Damian stood in the hallway.

Motionless.

Elias approached carefully.

"Boss."

Damian didn't respond.

"Are you okay?"

A strange question.

Because nobody asked Damian Costa that.

Not anymore.

He finally looked at Elias.

"No."

The honesty surprised both of them.

"No, I'm not."

Elias lowered his eyes.

"What do we do?"

Damian looked toward Leo's room.

Then toward Maya.

Then back at Elias.

"We find the truth."

"About Isabella?"

"About everything."

Damian took a breath.

"Because if my own family was willing to hurt my son..."

His expression changed.

"...then I need to know how deep this goes."

---

Later that afternoon, Damian returned to Leo's room.

The little boy immediately smiled.

"Papa."

Damian sat beside him.

"I'm here."

Leo studied his face.

"You look tired."

Damian almost laughed.

Almost.

"Do I?"

Leo nodded.

"Like when my dinosaur lost his tail."

Maya smiled softly.

Damian looked at his son.

"Your dinosaur?"

"Yeah."

Leo pointed to the small toy beside him.

"He was broken."

A pause.

"But I fixed him."

Damian looked at the toy.

Then at Leo.

"You fixed him?"

Leo nodded.

"Because broken things can still be good."

The words hit Damian harder than anything else.

Because maybe he needed to hear that.

Maybe he had spent too long believing broken things had no value.

Maybe people could make mistakes.

Maybe people could change.

But some things...

Some betrayals...

could not simply disappear.

---

That evening, Maya found Damian standing alone near the hospital window.

"You heard something."

It wasn't a question.

Damian looked outside.

"My sister knew."

Maya remained silent.

"She knew about the attack."

Maya slowly shook her head.

"I'm sorry."

Damian laughed quietly.

A sad, empty sound.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Because they don't know what else to say."

He looked at her.

"And you?"

Maya thought for a moment.

"I would say..."

She paused.

"Don't let their choices turn you into someone you don't want to be."

Damian stared at her.

Nobody had ever spoken to him like that.

Not with fear.

Not with judgment.

Just honesty.

"You lost someone too."

Maya looked away.

"My daughter."

"And you still saved Leo."

A tear formed in her eyes.

"I couldn't save Lily."

Her voice cracked.

"But I could save him."

Damian nodded slowly.

Then he said something unexpected.

"Maybe you did save more than him."

Maya looked at him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Two people who had lost everything important.

Finding a reason to keep going.

---

That night, Damian made his final decision.

He would not destroy the Costa family.

He would not return to the man everyone feared.

He would do something harder.

He would expose the truth...

without becoming the monster everyone expected.

But before he could begin...

Elias rushed into the room.

His face was pale.

"Boss."

Damian turned.

"What?"

Elias held a folder.

"We checked the hospital records again."

Damian stared.

"What did you find?"

Elias opened the folder.

Inside was a photo.

A security image.

The person entering Leo's room before the attack.

Damian looked at the picture.

And his blood ran cold.

Because the person in the image...

was not Victor Hale.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been standing beside Leo for years.

Someone Damian trusted completely.

Elias whispered:

"Boss..."

Damian looked closer.

The truth was worse than he imagined.

Because the person who tried to kill his son...

was someone he never thought he would have to fear.

May you like
