Chapter 2 - The Woman Who Stood Between Death and His Son

The room was silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence found in hospitals.

This was the kind of silence that came seconds before something terrible happened.

Damian Costa stood frozen in the doorway.

His gun was still raised.

His eyes moved between the woman holding the broken mop handle and the small boy lying unconscious behind her.

Leo.

His son.

The only person in the world who could make Damian forget who he was.

The woman didn't know his reputation.

She didn't know that powerful men had spent years trying to destroy him.

She didn't know that most people would have dropped whatever they were holding the moment they saw him.

She only knew one thing.

A child was behind her.

And someone was trying to hurt him.

"Put the weapon down," Damian ordered.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that made grown men nervous.

But the woman didn't move.

Her breathing was uneven.

Blood continued running from the cut near her temple.

Yet her eyes remained locked on him.

"No."

Elias, standing behind Damian, immediately stepped forward.

"Do you know who you're talking to?"

The woman glanced at him.

Then back at Damian.

"No."

A pause.

"And I don't care."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Elias looked almost confused.

In his entire career, he had seen people threaten Damian.

But they always did it because they were desperate.

This woman was different.

She was terrified.

But she wasn't afraid.

Damian slowly lowered his gun.

Not because he trusted her.

Because he noticed something.

Her body was positioned toward Leo.

Not toward the door.

Not toward escape.

She wasn't protecting herself.

She was protecting his son.

"Who are you?" Damian asked.

The woman's grip loosened slightly.

"Maya Lawson."

Her voice was exhausted.

"But you need to understand something."

She pointed the broken mop handle toward the hospital bed.

"Someone came here to kill that boy."

Damian's expression changed.

The room suddenly felt colder.

"What did you say?"

Maya looked toward Leo.

"I saw him."

"Who?"

"A man dressed like a doctor."

Damian's jaw tightened.

"A doctor?"

"No."

Maya shook her head.

"He wanted people to think he was one."

She took a slow breath.

"Wrong shoes. No hospital badge. No identification. He didn't check the chart. He didn't look at the monitor."

Her eyes moved back to Damian.

"He walked straight to Leo's IV."

The words hit harder than any weapon.

Damian looked at his son's small body.

The oxygen mask.

The IV.

The monitor.

Everything suddenly looked different.

This wasn't a medical emergency.

This was an attack.

"Where is he?"

Maya swallowed.

"I don't know."

Damian stepped closer.

"Tell me exactly what happened."

Maya looked at the broken mop handle in her hands.

Then at the blood on her sleeve.

Then finally at Leo.

"I was cleaning the hallway."

Her voice became quieter.

"It was my last shift of the night."

She explained how she had noticed the security desk was empty.

How she saw the man enter the room.

How something about him felt wrong.

"People who work in hospitals move differently," Maya said.

"They wash their hands before touching patients. They check names. They ask questions."

She looked at Leo.

"He didn't."

Damian listened without interrupting.

"I looked through the window."

Maya's voice trembled.

"He pulled out a syringe."

Elias' expression darkened.

"What was inside?"

"I don't know."

Maya shook her head.

"But I knew it wasn't supposed to go into that child's body."

A moment of silence.

Then Damian asked:

"What happened next?"

Maya looked down.

"He heard me."

The memory returned.

The footsteps.

The door opening.

The man's face.

The fear.

"He hit me."

She touched the cut on her forehead.

"I fell."

Damian's eyes hardened.

"But you fought back."

Maya looked at the broken mop handle.

"I grabbed whatever I could."

A faint silence followed.

Then she said:

"Because nobody else was there."

Those words stayed in the room.

Nobody else was there.

Damian Costa had spent his entire life surrounded by people.

Guards.

Employees.

Associates.

Men who would kill for him.

Yet when his son needed someone...

the person standing there was a woman who cleaned hospital floors.

A woman nobody important noticed.

A woman who had nothing to gain.

Damian looked at her carefully.

"Why?"

Maya frowned.

"What?"

"Why did you risk your life?"

Her expression changed.

For the first time, the strength disappeared.

Behind the anger...

Behind the courage...

was pain.

"Because three years ago..."

Her voice cracked.

"I was on the other side of that bed."

Damian said nothing.

"My daughter Lily was sick."

The room became still.

"I was a pediatric trauma nurse."

Elias looked surprised.

"I spent six years saving children."

Maya looked at Leo.

"Then one day, I couldn't save mine."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"But tonight..."

She looked at Damian.

"I had another chance."

Damian felt something inside him shift.

He understood revenge.

He understood loyalty.

But sacrifice?

That was something different.

A nurse entered the hallway outside.

Then another.

Voices grew louder.

Police had arrived.

Elias looked outside.

"Boss, we need to move."

Damian ignored him.

He walked toward Leo.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He touched his son's hand.

Cold.

Too cold.

But alive.

Then he looked at the monitor.

The heartbeat was still weak.

Maya noticed his expression.

"Something's wrong."

Damian looked back.

"What?"

"His heart rate."

She stepped closer.

"He shouldn't be this slow."

Damian stared at her.

"You said you were a nurse."

Maya nodded.

"Pediatric trauma."

"Why are you cleaning floors?"

A painful silence.

Then Maya answered:

"Because after Lily died..."

She looked away.

"I couldn't walk back into a hospital room."

Damian understood.

Grief had taken everything from her.

But somehow...

it had not taken her compassion.

Suddenly, a loud sound came from the hallway.

A hospital employee shouted.

"Police are here!"

Damian looked toward the door.

Then at Maya.

Then at Leo.

Something wasn't right.

The person who attacked his son knew exactly where Leo was.

They knew when security would be weak.

They knew the hospital layout.

This wasn't random.

This was someone close.

Someone with access.

Damian stood.

His expression changed.

The businessman disappeared.

The father remained.

"Maya."

She looked at him.

"Can you keep my son alive?"

She hesitated.

"Until the real doctors arrive?"

Damian nodded.

"No."

His voice became colder.

"Until I find the person who tried to kill him."

Maya looked into his eyes.

For the first time...

she saw something beyond the dangerous man everyone feared.

She saw a father.

A terrified father.

And she realized something.

Damian Costa wasn't fighting for power tonight.

He was fighting for his son's life.
