Chapter 5 - The Man Who Betrayed the Costa Family

For the first time in forty-eight hours, Damian Costa heard a sound that felt more powerful than any weapon.

His son's laughter.

It was weak.

Small.

Almost fragile.

But it was real.

Leo was awake.

The doctors had explained that his recovery would take time. His body had been through a dangerous amount of stress. His heart needed monitoring. His medication needed to be carefully controlled.

But he was alive.

And for Damian, that was enough.

He sat beside the hospital bed while Leo slowly ate a few spoonfuls of soup.

"You know," Leo whispered, "the dinosaurs would have protected me too."

Damian looked at him.

"Dinosaur?"

Leo nodded seriously.

"The big ones."

A small smile appeared on Damian's face.

"The big ones?"

"Yeah."

Leo looked toward Maya, who was sitting in the corner.

"They protect little ones."

Maya smiled softly.

"Sounds like they do."

Damian watched them.

A woman who had lost her own child.

A son who had almost been taken away from him.

Two broken souls who somehow found each other in the worst possible moment.

And Damian realized something.

Power had never protected Leo.

Money had not saved him.

His guards had not saved him.

His reputation had not saved him.

The person who saved his son was someone nobody in his world would have noticed.

A woman holding a mop.

---

But Damian Costa knew better than anyone.

Moments of peace never lasted.

Especially not in his world.

The door opened.

Elias walked inside.

His expression was serious.

Damian immediately knew.

"What happened?"

Elias looked at Leo.

Then at Maya.

"We found Marco."

The room became quiet.

Damian's eyes narrowed.

"Where?"

"An abandoned warehouse in Brooklyn."

"Alive?"

Elias nodded.

"Yes."

Damian stood.

Leo looked up.

"Papa?"

Damian immediately softened.

"I'm just going to talk to someone."

Leo stared at him.

"Promise you'll come back?"

The question stopped Damian.

Because years ago, he would have answered without thinking.

Now he understood something.

Children didn't need promises from powerful men.

They needed fathers who kept them.

"I promise."

Leo smiled slightly.

"Okay."

Damian turned toward Maya.

"Stay with him."

Maya nodded.

But before Damian left, Leo grabbed his hand.

"Papa."

Damian looked down.

"Thank you for finding Maya."

The words surprised him.

Because Leo understood something even adults often forgot.

Some people didn't have to be family by blood.

Sometimes...

they became family by choice.

---

The abandoned warehouse smelled like rust and old concrete.

Rain dripped through broken windows.

Damian walked inside alone.

Elias and his men waited outside.

This conversation was personal.

At the center of the warehouse stood Marco Vieri.

His oldest friend.

The man who once stood beside him when nobody else did.

The man who had saved Damian's life.

Now his hands were tied.

And his eyes carried something Damian hated more than anger.

Regret.

"Damian."

Marco looked exhausted.

"You shouldn't have come alone."

Damian stopped a few feet away.

"You tried to kill my son."

Marco looked away.

"I didn't."

Damian's face remained emotionless.

"Don't lie to me."

Silence.

"You hired Victor Hale."

Marco closed his eyes.

"I hired him to scare you."

Damian stared.

"Scare me?"

Marco looked up.

"I wanted you to understand."

A bitter laugh escaped him.

"You think you can walk away from everything? You think the world lets men like us become normal?"

Damian's expression hardened.

"So you poisoned my child to teach me a lesson?"

"No!"

Marco shouted.

Then immediately lowered his voice.

"I didn't know Leo would be there."

Damian stepped closer.

"That is supposed to make me feel better?"

Marco said nothing.

Because he knew.

There was no excuse.

No explanation.

No reason big enough to justify what happened.

Damian looked at him.

"Why?"

For the first time, Marco looked broken.

"Because you changed."

Damian frowned.

"What?"

"You used to understand this world."

Marco shook his head.

"Then Leo was born."

A painful smile appeared.

"You started believing you could become someone else."

Damian said nothing.

"Do you know what happened to people like us when we try to become good?"

Marco looked around the warehouse.

"They destroy us."

Damian's voice became cold.

"No."

A pause.

"They destroy people who are too weak to change."

Marco looked at him.

"You think you're different?"

Damian walked closer.

"I know I am."

---

Marco looked down.

Then quietly said:

"There's something you don't know."

Damian stopped.

"What?"

Marco hesitated.

"The attack wasn't only my idea."

A silence followed.

Damian's eyes sharpened.

"What are you talking about?"

Marco swallowed.

"Victor Hale was working for someone else."

"Who?"

Marco looked directly at him.

"Someone inside your family."

The words hit harder than expected.

Damian stared.

"My family?"

Marco nodded.

"Someone who knows Leo."

Someone who knew the hospital.

Someone who knew Damian.

Someone close enough to hurt him.

"Who?"

Marco looked terrified.

And that scared Damian more than anything.

Because Marco Vieri was not afraid of many things.

But this name frightened him.

Before Marco could answer...

A gunshot exploded through the warehouse.

The sound echoed.

Marco fell backward.

Damian immediately moved.

Someone had fired from the shadows.

Another shot hit the wall beside him.

Elias and his men rushed inside.

"Boss!"

Damian ignored them.

He looked at Marco.

Blood spread across his shirt.

But before losing consciousness, Marco grabbed Damian's arm.

"Find..."

He struggled to breathe.

"Find the person closest to Leo..."

Damian leaned closer.

"Who?"

Marco's eyes closed.

Then he whispered one final name.

A name Damian never expected.

"Your sister..."

---

The world seemed to stop.

Damian stood frozen.

His own sister.

The person who held Leo when he was born.

The person who kissed his forehead.

The person he trusted more than anyone.

No.

It couldn't be.

But Damian had learned one painful lesson.

The people closest to you were often the ones who knew exactly where to place the knife.

---

Back at the hospital, Maya noticed something was wrong the moment Damian returned.

His face had changed.

The anger was gone.

Something worse had replaced it.

Pain.

"Damian?"

He looked at Leo sleeping peacefully.

Then at Maya.

"Someone in my family tried to kill my son."

Maya's expression changed.

"Who?"

Damian didn't answer.

Because saying the name out loud would make it real.

But then his phone rang.

The screen showed one name.

His sister.

The woman who had cried when Leo was born.

The woman who claimed she loved him.

Damian answered.

"Hello."

Her voice came through.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

"Damian..."

A pause.

"I heard Leo woke up."

Damian looked at his son.

Then at Maya.

And for the first time in his life...

he realized the enemy he was searching for...

had never been outside the family.

It had been standing beside him all along.

May you like
