Chapter 5 - The Truth Behind Grant’s Betrayal

For the next forty-eight hours, Grant disappeared.

Not physically.

He was still everywhere.

His name appeared in messages.

His face appeared in photographs from the party.

His friends continued posting pictures from the mansion, smiling in rooms that no longer felt like mine.

But Grant himself stopped calling.

Stopped threatening.

Stopped pretending he was in control.

And somehow, that frightened me more than his anger.

Because I knew Grant.

When he was angry, he wanted to be seen.

When he was confident, he wanted everyone watching.

But when Grant became quiet?

That meant he was planning.

Rachel noticed it too.

“He is waiting for something,” she said.

We were sitting in her office downtown.

Ava was with Nora, sleeping peacefully while I tried to untangle the nightmare my life had become.

Rachel had covered the entire conference table with documents.

Property records.

Emails.

Bank statements.

Messages.

Everything connected to Grant's actions.

“He isn't backing away,” Rachel continued.

“He's repositioning.”

I looked at the papers.

“What does he have left?”

Rachel leaned back.

“Possibly another angle.”

“What angle?”

She hesitated.

And I hated that.

Rachel was not someone who hesitated.

“What?”

She tapped one document.

“Before we accuse Grant of everything, we need to understand why he thought this plan would work.”

I frowned.

“He knew the house wasn't his.”

“Yes.”

“He knew the prenup protected me.”

“Yes.”

“He knew the deed was only in my name.”

“Yes.”

“Then why would he risk everything?”

Rachel looked at me.

“That is the question.”

That evening, I received a message from an unknown number.

At first, I ignored it.

Then another message arrived.

You deserve to know why he did this.

I stared at the screen.

Rachel had warned me not to respond to unknown contacts.

But something inside me told me this mattered.

I replied:

Who are you?

The answer came immediately.

Someone who worked with Grant before you knew what he was really like.

My fingers froze.

I showed Rachel.

She immediately called the number.

No answer.

Then another message appeared.

Meet me tomorrow. Alone.

Rachel shook her head.

“No.”

I looked at her.

“You don't even know who it is.”

“Exactly.”

“I need answers.”

“You need protection.”

I understood her concern.

But I also understood something else.

Grant had spent months creating a story about me.

He had convinced people I was unstable.

Unreasonable.

Difficult.

And the only way to destroy a lie was to uncover the truth.

“I’m going.”

Rachel looked at me.

“Lena.”

“I won't be reckless.”

She stayed silent.

Then finally said:

“I’m coming too.”

The meeting happened at a quiet coffee shop outside downtown.

The kind of place where nobody looked twice at anyone.

I arrived first.

Five minutes later, a man walked in.

Early forties.

Dark jacket.

Nervous expression.

He looked around before approaching.

“Lena?”

I nodded.

He sat down.

“My name is David.”

I waited.

He took a deep breath.

“I used to work for Grant.”

Rachel immediately became alert.

“What kind of work?”

David looked uncomfortable.

“Financial consulting.”

That made me tense.

“Consulting for what?”

He looked at me.

“For the company Grant was trying to build.”

I frowned.

“Grant doesn't have a company.”

David gave a bitter smile.

“Not anymore.”

The words confused me.

“What do you mean?”

He placed a folder on the table.

“This started two years ago.”

I opened it.

Inside were financial documents.

Investment agreements.

Loans.

Transfers.

My eyes moved quickly.

Then stopped.

I recognized the name.

My company.

My business.

My resources.

“What is this?”

David lowered his voice.

“Grant has been struggling financially.”

Rachel picked up the papers.

“Explain.”

David looked at me.

“He wanted investors to believe he had access to family assets.”

I felt sick.

“Family assets?”

“Yes.”

“The house.”

He nodded.

“The lifestyle.”

My chest tightened.

“He used my property as leverage?”

“Yes.”

Rachel's expression became cold.

“How much debt?”

David hesitated.

“Approximately $2.4 million.”

The number hit the table like a physical object.

I stared at him.

“Two million dollars?”

David nodded.

“Grant convinced people that after marriage, he would eventually control those assets.”

I closed my eyes.

So that was it.

The house wasn't just a symbol.

It was collateral in his fantasy.

He didn't want my home because he loved luxury.

He wanted it because he needed something valuable enough to save himself.

“Why are you telling me this now?” Rachel asked.

David looked ashamed.

“Because I was wrong.”

He looked at me.

“I helped him prepare documents.”

My expression hardened.

“You helped him?”

“Yes.”

“Then why should I trust you?”

He looked down.

“Because when I realized what he was doing, I quit.”

Rachel studied him.

“What exactly did you realize?”

David swallowed.

“That Grant wasn't trying to build a future.”

A pause.

“He was trying to buy time.”

The words stayed with me.

Buy time.

For what?

David opened another file.

“There is more.”

Inside was an email chain.

Grant's messages.

I read the first one.

Need Lena's signature before she realizes the exposure.

My stomach turned.

The second:

Once the property is transferred, everything changes.

The third:

She won't fight. She's too emotional after the baby.

I stopped reading.

My hands were shaking.

Not because I was surprised.

Because I wasn't.

That was the worst part.

Somewhere deep down, I already knew.

Grant didn't see my childbirth as a moment to protect me.

He saw it as a weakness.

A temporary condition.

A chance.

Rachel took the folder.

“We need copies of everything.”

David nodded.

“I already sent them to you.”

Rachel looked at him.

“Why?”

He looked toward the window.

“Because I have a daughter.”

Silence.

Then he said:

“If someone tried to take her from me because they thought I was weak…”

He shook his head.

“I wouldn't forgive myself.”

That night, I returned to Nora's house.

Ava was awake.

She was tiny.

Fragile.

Completely dependent on me.

I sat in the rocking chair holding her.

And for the first time since this began, I cried.

Not because of the mansion.

Not because of Grant.

Because I realized the man I loved had looked at our daughter and seen an opportunity.

A weakness.

A bargaining chip.

I kissed Ava's forehead.

“I promise you something.”

My voice trembled.

“You will never grow up thinking love means allowing someone to hurt you.”

The next morning, Rachel arrived with news.

“Grant filed paperwork.”

I looked up.

“What kind?”

“Emergency custody request.”

My heart dropped.

“He actually did it.”

“Yes.”

“What reason?”

Rachel placed the documents down.

The accusation was written clearly.

Concerns regarding Lena’s emotional stability after childbirth.

I stared at the words.

The exact story he had been building.

The exact weapon he planned to use.

I felt anger rise inside me.

Not explosive anger.

Something colder.

Something stronger.

Rachel watched me carefully.

“Lena.”

I looked at her.

“Yes?”

“Are you ready?”

I knew what she meant.

This was no longer about a house.

No longer about a marriage.

This was about my daughter.

I closed the folder.

“Yes.”

“What are we doing?”

I looked at the evidence.

The lies.

The forged documents.

The manipulation.

Then I answered:

“We stop proving that I am a good mother.”

A pause.

“We prove that he was never a good father.”

Rachel nodded.

And for the first time, I saw something I hadn't seen before.

Not sympathy.

Not concern.

Confidence.

Because now we weren't fighting to survive.

We were fighting to expose the truth.

Three days later, Grant walked into court believing he had prepared the perfect story.

He arrived wearing an expensive suit.

He brought Elaine.

He brought witnesses.

He brought everything designed to make him look like the responsible husband.

But he didn't know one thing.

Rachel had uncovered something even bigger.

Something hidden in the financial records.

Something that could destroy not only his custody case...

But his entire reputation.

As Grant sat down across the courtroom from me, he looked confident.

Almost amused.

Then Rachel placed a folder on the judge's desk.

And Grant's expression changed instantly.

May you like

Because inside that folder was the one thing he never expected us to find.

The truth about what he had done before he ever locked me outside the mansion.
