Chapter 4 - The Family Celebration That Turned Into A Disaster

Grant always believed he was smarter than everyone else.

That was one of the things I noticed about him early in our marriage.

He wasn't just confident.

Confidence could be attractive.

Grant had something different.

He had the kind of confidence that came from believing other people were easier to manipulate than he was.

He believed he could control conversations.

Control situations.

Control people.

And for years, I allowed him to believe that.

Not because I was weak.

Because I loved him.

I thought giving someone trust was a sign of strength.

I didn't realize that in the wrong person's hands, trust became a weapon.

Three days after Grant returned from Miami, he invited everyone to the mansion.

At first, I thought it was a mistake.

Then Rachel showed me the invitation.

It was sent to dozens of people.

Friends.

Business partners.

Family members.

Neighbors.

The message was simple:

"Join Grant and Elaine Carter for an evening celebrating a new chapter."

I stared at the screen.

"A new chapter?"

Rachel nodded.

"Apparently."

Nora looked disgusted.

"He is throwing a party?"

I didn't answer.

Because deep down, I already knew what it was.

A performance.

Grant was not celebrating.

He was proving something.

He wanted everyone to believe he had won.

He wanted the world to see him standing inside my house.

He wanted me to feel powerless.

But he made one mistake.

He forgot that people who celebrate too early usually reveal everything.

The night of the event, I didn't go.

Rachel advised me not to.

"You don't need to walk into his environment."

"He wants me to show up."

"Exactly."

She looked at me seriously.

"He wants an emotional reaction."

I looked down at Ava, who was sleeping in my arms.

"And if I don't give him one?"

"Then he loses control."

That was something I had learned about Grant.

He could handle anger.

He could handle arguments.

But he couldn't handle silence.

Silence meant he couldn't predict what was coming next.

So instead of going to the mansion, I stayed at Nora's house.

I fed Ava.

I held her.

I watched the rain disappear outside the window.

And for the first time in days, I felt something I hadn't felt since this nightmare began.

Peace.

But that peace didn't last.

Because at 8:47 p.m., Rachel called.

I answered immediately.

"What happened?"

Her voice was serious.

"Are you watching the livestream?"

I frowned.

"What livestream?"

She sent me a link.

I opened it.

And there he was.

Grant.

Standing in my living room.

Holding a glass of champagne.

Surrounded by people who had no idea what was happening.

"My wife and I have always believed this home represents family," he said.

I felt my stomach turn.

My wife.

He still used those words.

Not because he loved me.

Because he wanted the image.

He continued.

"We're excited to finally begin building the future we deserve."

People applauded.

Elaine stood beside him smiling.

Then someone asked:

"Does this mean the house is officially yours now?"

Grant laughed.

A confident laugh.

The kind of laugh someone makes when they think they are untouchable.

"Let's just say everything is moving in the right direction."

Rachel froze the video.

"Did you hear that?"

I nodded.

"He admitted it."

"Exactly."

She replayed it.

"Moving in the right direction."

Rachel leaned closer.

"That statement matters."

"Why?"

"Because he is publicly representing ownership."

I looked at the screen.

Grant was walking through rooms I designed.

Rooms I paid for.

Rooms where I had imagined raising my daughter.

And he was acting like he created everything.

Then something happened.

Something neither of us expected.

The camera moved.

And in the background, I saw someone.

A woman.

Standing near the staircase.

Someone I recognized.

My former assistant.

Megan.

I sat up.

"Wait."

Rachel looked.

"What?"

"Zoom in."

She did.

Megan was holding a drink.

But she wasn't smiling.

She looked uncomfortable.

Like she didn't want to be there.

"Why is she there?" I whispered.

Rachel didn't answer.

Then Megan looked directly at the camera.

And walked away.

Twenty minutes later, my phone received a message.

From Megan.

I hadn't spoken to her in almost a year.

The message contained only one sentence.

"Lena, I need to tell you what Grant did before Ava was born."

My heart stopped.

I immediately called her.

She answered after one ring.

Her voice was shaking.

"Lena?"

"Megan, where are you?"

"I'm outside."

"Outside where?"

"The mansion."

I stood up.

"What are you doing there?"

"I came because I couldn't keep quiet anymore."

I looked at Rachel.

She immediately understood.

"Put her on speaker."

I did.

Megan took a deep breath.

"Grant has been planning this for months."

I closed my eyes.

"I know about the house."

"No."

Her voice became quieter.

"You don't."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What else?"

There was a pause.

Then she said:

"He wasn't just trying to take the property."

Rachel leaned forward.

"What was he trying to do?"

Megan whispered:

"He was trying to make you look mentally unstable."

The room went silent.

I felt like the air disappeared.

"What?"

Megan continued.

"He told people you were overwhelmed after pregnancy."

My hands tightened.

"He told them you weren't thinking clearly."

Rachel's expression changed.

"Who did he tell?"

Megan swallowed.

"His mother. His friends. Some business contacts."

My voice was barely audible.

"He was building a story."

"Yes."

Megan's voice cracked.

"He wanted people to believe you couldn't manage the house, the company, or the baby."

I looked at Ava.

My daughter.

My newborn daughter.

And suddenly, the lock on the door wasn't the most terrifying part.

It was the plan behind it.

Grant wasn't just trying to steal my house.

He was trying to destroy my credibility.

The next morning, Rachel called an emergency meeting.

She arrived with a stack of documents.

"We have a bigger problem."

I looked at her.

"How much bigger?"

She placed a folder on the table.

"Grant has been preparing for a custody argument."

My blood went cold.

"He wants Ava?"

Rachel nodded.

"He may claim you are unstable because of postpartum recovery."

I stared at her.

The room felt smaller.

"He would use our daughter?"

Rachel didn't answer immediately.

That was the answer.

I covered my mouth.

For a moment, I wasn't a successful businesswoman.

I wasn't someone who had negotiated million-dollar contracts.

I was just a mother.

A mother realizing the man she trusted was willing to use their child as a weapon.

Nora came closer.

"Lena."

I shook my head.

"No."

My voice became stronger.

"No."

I looked at Rachel.

"What do we do?"

Rachel opened her folder.

"Now we stop reacting."

She looked directly at me.

"We expose everything."

That afternoon, something unexpected happened.

Grant called.

But this time, he wasn't angry.

He sounded worried.

"Lena."

"What?"

"We need to talk."

"No."

A pause.

"Please."

The word surprised me.

Grant didn't say please.

Not when he wanted something.

Not when he was wrong.

Not when he hurt me.

"What changed?"

Silence.

Then:

"You don't understand what's happening."

I almost laughed.

"No, Grant."

I looked at the legal documents in front of me.

"I understand perfectly."

His voice lowered.

"Your attorney is making this worse."

"No."

I answered calmly.

"Your choices made it worse."

Then he said the words that revealed everything.

"You don't know who you're fighting against."

I froze.

Because for the first time...

I realized Grant wasn't only afraid of losing the house.

He was afraid of someone else finding out.

Someone more powerful.

Someone he had been protecting.

"Who?" I asked.

Silence.

Then the call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Rachel looked at me.

"What happened?"

I slowly placed the phone down.

"Grant is hiding something."

She nodded.

"And now we find out what."

Outside the window, the sun finally came out after days of rain.

But I knew the storm wasn't over.

It was only changing direction.

May you like

And this time...

It was heading straight toward Grant.
