Chapter 5 - One Minute Before Justice

For years, the Vance family lived by one belief:

Money could erase anything.

A mistake.

A scandal.

A person.

Arthur Vance had spent decades proving that if someone had enough power, they could rewrite history.

But there was one thing even billions of dollars could not control.

The truth.

And now the truth was finally coming back.

---

The courthouse was surrounded by reporters.

Every major news network had cameras outside.

The Vance scandal had become the biggest corporate story in the country.

But nobody expected the new revelation.

Arthur Vance had a secret family.

A hidden past.

A child he abandoned.

The man who built his empire on the image of family values had spent twenty years hiding the fact that he destroyed his own.

Inside the courthouse, Clara sat quietly beside her attorney.

Her pregnancy was becoming harder.

The stress.

The fear.

The emotional damage.

Everything had taken a toll.

But she refused to leave.

She needed to know the truth.

Across the room, Julian sat alone.

For the first time in his life, nobody was trying to impress him.

No assistants.

No business partners.

No friends pretending loyalty.

Just Julian.

A man forced to face the consequences of his choices.

When their eyes met, Clara saw something she had never seen before.

Shame.

Not enough to erase what he did.

But real shame.

The judge entered.

The room became silent.

Before the hearing began, a woman walked in.

Evelyn Carter.

The woman from the news.

Arthur’s first wife.

Everyone turned toward her.

Arthur, sitting beside his lawyers, immediately changed expression.

Fear.

Pure fear.

“Evelyn,” he whispered.

She ignored him.

She walked forward and sat down.

For twenty years, Arthur had convinced the world she never existed.

But now she was standing in front of everyone.

Alive.

And carrying proof.

---

The judge looked at the documents presented by investigators.

“Mrs. Carter, explain your relationship with Mr. Vance.”

Evelyn took a deep breath.

“I married Arthur Vance when we were young.”

The courtroom listened.

“Before he became powerful. Before he became wealthy.”

She looked at Arthur.

“Before he decided people were disposable.”

Arthur’s lawyer immediately objected.

“Your Honor, emotional statements are irrelevant.”

The judge nodded.

“Stick to the facts.”

Evelyn opened a folder.

“The facts are that Arthur Vance legally married me.”

She placed documents on the table.

“The facts are that we had a child together.”

The room erupted.

Reporters outside immediately started sending updates.

Julian froze.

A child.

His father had another child?

Arthur leaned toward his lawyer.

“This is a lie.”

But nobody believed him anymore.

Evelyn continued.

“After Arthur became successful, he decided his wife and child were a weakness.”

Her voice shook slightly.

“He offered me money to disappear.”

Clara felt a cold feeling.

Because it sounded familiar.

The same way Arthur treated everyone.

Like people were objects.

“If I refused,” Evelyn continued, “he threatened to take my child away.”

The judge looked serious.

“Where is the child now?”

Evelyn looked toward Julian.

The entire courtroom followed her gaze.

Julian’s face turned pale.

Clara noticed.

Something was wrong.

“What?” Julian whispered.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your father told you that you were his only son.”

Julian slowly stood.

“What are you saying?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with sadness.

“He lied.”

Silence.

The kind of silence where everyone knows something life-changing is coming.

“You are not Arthur Vance’s only child.”

Julian stopped breathing.

Clara watched his expression.

For the first time, Julian looked like a child himself.

Confused.

Lost.

“Who is?”

Evelyn looked down.

Then she answered.

“Your older sister.”

The room went completely still.

---

Later that day, Clara returned to her attorney’s office.

She had a thousand questions.

But one question mattered most.

“Why did Arthur hide her?”

Michael placed several files on the desk.

“Because she threatened his empire.”

Clara opened the documents.

The name appeared again.

A woman named Olivia Carter.

Arthur’s first child.

A woman who refused to become part of his company.

A woman who exposed corruption years ago.

A woman Arthur tried to erase.

“She knew about the illegal transactions?”

Michael nodded.

“She discovered them before anyone else.”

Clara stared at the papers.

“So Arthur destroyed his own daughter.”

“Yes.”

“Just like he destroyed everyone else.”

Michael didn’t answer.

Because it was true.

---

That evening, Julian came to see Clara again.

This time, he looked different.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Broken.

“I met her.”

Clara looked up.

“Who?”

“My sister.”

She said nothing.

Julian walked closer.

“She knew about everything.”

Clara watched him carefully.

“What did she tell you?”

Julian looked away.

“That my father spent my entire life controlling me.”

A bitter smile appeared on his face.

“I thought I was the chosen son.”

He laughed quietly.

“But I was just another piece on his chessboard.”

Clara felt something strange.

For a moment, she almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

But then she remembered the baby shower.

The words.

The humiliation.

The pain.

“You became him, Julian.”

His face fell.

“I know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t.”

She stood slowly.

“You had a choice.”

Julian looked at her.

“You could have protected me.”

Silence.

“You could have chosen our child.”

Another pause.

“But you chose power.”

Julian lowered his eyes.

Because there was nothing he could say.

---

That night, Clara received a message from Michael.

A new discovery.

A final piece of evidence.

Something found inside Arthur’s private vault.

She opened the attached file.

Her hands froze.

It was a document.

A contract.

Signed by Julian.

But dated months before the baby shower.

The title:

SUCCESSION AGREEMENT.

Clara read the first line.

Then her heart stopped.

Because the agreement stated:

If Clara Vance gives birth to a child, Julian Vance will inherit full control of Vance International Holdings.

But underneath that clause was another handwritten note.

Written by Arthur.

One sentence.

A sentence that changed everything.

"If the child is not a male heir, the agreement becomes void."

Clara stared at the screen.

The baby shower.

The mistress.

The humiliation.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Chloe was never about love.

She was about an heir.

A male heir.

Arthur didn’t care about family.

He cared about control.

Clara placed one hand over her stomach.

Her baby had never been loved by the Vance family.

Only valued.

Used.

Measured.

And that realization hurt more than betrayal.

But then Clara looked at the document again.

And something inside her changed.

The same calm strength returned.

Because Arthur Vance made one final mistake.

He thought he knew what kind of mother Clara would be.

He thought she would break.

He thought she would disappear.

He was wrong.

Clara closed the file.

Then she called Michael.

“Prepare everything.”

Michael paused.

“For what?”

Clara looked out the window.

At the city lights.

At the life she was building without Julian.

“For the moment Arthur Vance loses everything.”

A few miles away, inside a private room, Arthur received a phone call.

His expression changed.

“What do you mean the documents were found?”

A pause.

Then:

“Who has them?”

The answer came.

Arthur’s face turned pale.

“Clara?”

For the first time in decades...

Arthur Vance felt fear.

Because he finally understood.

The woman he tried to destroy...

was the person who could bring down his entire empire.

May you like

And this time...

there was no way to stop her.
