Chapter 3 - The Secret Inside The Empire

The morning after the FBI raid, the Vance family name became the headline nobody could ignore.

For decades, Arthur Vance had built an image of perfection.

A billionaire businessman.

A respected philanthropist.

A man who appeared on magazine covers shaking hands with politicians and donating millions to charities.

The public saw a powerful family.

A dynasty.

But behind the marble walls of the Vance mansion was something completely different.

A web of lies.

And now, that web was unraveling.

Clara watched the news from the quiet guest room of a private medical suite.

She sat beside the window, one hand resting over her belly.

The city outside continued moving.

Cars passed.

People walked.

Life continued.

But Clara felt like her entire world had changed in a single afternoon.

The television reporter spoke with a serious expression.

“Federal investigators have launched one of the largest corporate fraud investigations in recent years. Billionaire Arthur Vance and several executives connected to Vance International Holdings are under investigation for suspected financial crimes.”

Images appeared on the screen.

The mansion.

The FBI vehicles.

Arthur being escorted by agents.

Then Julian.

His face was everywhere.

The man who once controlled every room he entered now looked like someone who didn’t know where to stand.

Clara turned off the television.

She didn’t need to watch anymore.

She already knew what happened.

She had spent fourteen months waiting for this moment.

But she never expected it to happen like this.

Not while she was pregnant.

Not surrounded by people celebrating her pain.

Not while her husband looked into her eyes and called another woman the future of his family.

A nurse entered quietly.

“Mrs. Vance?”

Clara looked up.

“Yes?”

“The doctor wants to check on you again.”

Clara nodded.

The nurse hesitated.

“Your blood pressure was high after what happened yesterday.”

Clara looked down.

“I know.”

“You went through a very traumatic event.”

A small, tired smile appeared on Clara’s face.

“Trauma doesn’t always look like crying.”

The nurse studied her.

“You’re stronger than most people would be.”

Clara looked toward the window.

“No.”

She paused.

“I just didn’t have the luxury of falling apart.”

---

Two days later, Clara received a visit she never expected.

Julian.

The security guard almost refused to let him enter.

Clara almost told them not to allow him in.

Almost.

But something inside her wanted answers.

Not forgiveness.

Answers.

When Julian entered the room, he looked completely different.

The expensive suit was gone.

The confident smile was gone.

The man standing in front of her looked exhausted.

Broken.

Clara remained seated.

“What do you want?”

Julian swallowed.

“I wanted to see if you were okay.”

The words almost made her laugh.

“Now you care?”

His face tightened.

“I made mistakes.”

“Mistakes?”

Clara looked at him.

“You cheated on your pregnant wife.”

Silence.

“You humiliated me in front of everyone.”

Another pause.

“You allowed your parents to treat me like I was nothing.”

Julian lowered his head.

“I know.”

“No,” Clara replied.

Her voice remained calm.

“You don’t.”

Julian looked at her.

“You think I don’t regret it?”

“I think you regret losing your perfect life.”

That sentence hit him.

Because deep down, he knew she was right.

Before the FBI arrived, Julian believed he had everything.

A wealthy family.

A powerful father.

A beautiful wife.

A child.

A mistress who made him feel admired.

He thought he could control every person around him.

Including Clara.

But he never understood her.

That was his greatest mistake.

“I never wanted this to happen,” Julian whispered.

Clara looked at him.

“Then why did you let it?”

He had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

After a moment, Julian reached into his jacket.

He placed a small envelope on the table.

Clara looked at it.

“What is that?”

“Something I found after the raid.”

She didn’t touch it.

“Why give it to me?”

“Because you deserve to know.”

Clara slowly opened the envelope.

Inside were copies of old medical documents.

Her eyes narrowed.

“What is this?”

Julian looked uncomfortable.

“I found them in my father’s private files.”

Clara began reading.

Then she stopped.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

Julian looked away.

“My father knew about your pregnancy before we announced it.”

Clara frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Julian shook his head.

“He knew.”

She continued reading.

The documents were not about her pregnancy.

They were about genetic testing.

Clara’s heart started beating faster.

“What is this?”

Julian took a deep breath.

“Before the baby shower, my father secretly ordered a test.”

Clara stared at him.

“A test for what?”

Julian’s silence answered before his words did.

“For the baby.”

The room became completely still.

Clara’s fingers tightened around the papers.

“He tested our baby?”

Julian nodded.

“My father wanted proof.”

“Proof of what?”

Julian looked ashamed.

“That the baby was really a Vance.”

Clara felt anger rising inside her.

Not because of the test.

Because of what it revealed.

The Vance family had never seen her child as a person.

Only as an asset.

A bloodline.

A business investment.

“What were the results?”

Julian looked at the floor.

“That’s the part I don’t understand.”

Clara stared at him.

“What do you mean?”

“The results were hidden.”

She looked back at the papers.

“Hidden?”

Julian nodded.

“My father destroyed the original report.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

For the first time, Julian looked genuinely afraid.

“There’s something else.”

Clara waited.

“The FBI found another file.”

“What file?”

Julian looked at her.

“A file about me.”

The silence that followed felt heavy.

Clara slowly placed the papers down.

“What does that mean?”

Julian hesitated.

“My father had been investigating me.”

Clara frowned.

“Investigating his own son?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Julian sat down.

For the first time in years, he looked like a scared child instead of a powerful man.

“Because my father never trusted anyone.”

Clara studied him.

“You’re saying Arthur was keeping secrets from you?”

Julian nodded.

“And I think…”

He stopped.

“What?”

Julian looked at her.

“I think the reason he wanted that DNA test wasn’t because he doubted you.”

Clara felt a chill.

“Then why?”

Julian’s voice dropped.

“Because he was afraid the baby might change everything.”

Before Clara could respond, her phone rang.

It was her attorney.

She answered.

“Hello?”

The lawyer’s voice sounded urgent.

“Clara, you need to come to my office immediately.”

“Why?”

A pause.

Then:

“Because we found the missing financial records.”

Clara sat up.

“What records?”

“The ones your husband and his father tried to erase.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“And?”

The lawyer lowered his voice.

“They reveal that Arthur Vance wasn’t just hiding money.”

Clara waited.

“He was hiding someone.”

The room went silent.

“Who?”

The lawyer hesitated.

“Someone connected to the Vance family.”

Clara felt a strange fear move through her.

After everything she had discovered...

after exposing an empire...

she thought the worst was over.

She was wrong.

Because the Vance family’s biggest secret...

was not the money.

Not the corruption.

Not even the betrayal.

May you like

It was the person they had spent years trying to hide.

And Clara was about to uncover the truth.
