Chapter 2 - The Twelve-Million-Dollar Lie

Daniel Hayes had spent four years avoiding hospitals.
After losing his wife, Sarah, to cancer, he had learned that certain smells could drag a man backward through time. Antiseptic. Plastic curtains. The faint mechanical rhythm of a heart monitor.
So when his phone rang at 2:07 a.m., he almost ignored it.
Then he heard the woman crying.
“Marcus… please. I don't want to die alone.”
Daniel knew immediately that she had the wrong number.
“My name isn't Marcus.”
Silence.
Then a trembling breath.
“I'm sorry.”
“You should probably call him.”
“I did.”
Her voice cracked.
“He didn't answer.”
Daniel should have ended the call.
Instead, he heard Sarah's voice in his memory.
Don't leave me alone.
Twenty minutes later, Daniel walked into Massachusetts General Hospital.
Room 608 changed everything.
The woman in the bed was Renee Sterling, sole daughter of the late billionaire Arthur Sterling and CEO of Sterling Global Technologies.
She was thirty-two, dangerously ill, and surrounded by machines.
But what struck Daniel wasn't her wealth.
It was the fear in her eyes.
Her boyfriend, Marcus, had disappeared after her diagnosis. Her friends had stopped visiting. Her company's executives were quietly preparing for a leadership transition.
Daniel stayed until sunrise.
Three days later, a black Lincoln Navigator arrived at his electrical repair shop.
Renee wanted to see him.
At her Beacon Hill estate, she made an unbelievable offer.
Six months.
Pretend to be her partner.
Twelve million dollars.
Daniel nearly laughed.
Until Renee explained the reason.
Her father's estate had created a succession clause. If Renee became medically incapacitated without a spouse or direct heir, temporary control of Sterling Global would pass to a five-member executive committee.
Three members already wanted her removed.
Someone inside the company was deliberately weakening her authority.
Someone who knew exactly how sick she was.
And Renee believed the only person she could trust was the stranger who had answered her desperate call.
Daniel refused.
Until someone threatened his daughter Lily.
That night, a photograph arrived on his phone.
Lily sleeping at her friend's house.
The message was simple:
Stay away from Renee Sterling.
Daniel understood then.
This was no longer about twelve million dollars.

Someone had crossed a line.
And Daniel Hayes was about to walk into a war he didn't understand.
