Chapter 5 - The Night Rafe Chose a Different Kind of Power

By the time Mave reached the hospital, she couldn't feel her injured shoulder anymore.

Fear had swallowed everything else.

Finn had collapsed while sitting at the kitchen table with Sofia.

One moment he'd been arguing that marshmallows counted as breakfast.

The next, his face had gone pale.

He'd whispered Sofia's name.

Then slid from his chair.

Sofia called emergency services immediately.

When Mave reached the pediatric cardiac floor, Sofia stood outside an examination room crying silently.

Mave grabbed her.

"Where is he?"

"They're with him."

"What happened?"

"I don't know."

"Mave."

Rafe arrived behind her.

She turned on him.

Not because he'd done anything wrong.

Because there was nobody else to blame.

"You said he would be safe."

Rafe absorbed it.

"I know."

"This was supposed to be safe."

"I know."

"I left him because—"

Her voice broke.

Sofia took her hand.

"This wasn't because anyone came after him."

Mave stared at her.

"The doctor thinks it's his heart."

That was worse.

A cardiologist emerged.

"Ms. Donovan?"

Mave stepped forward.

"Tell me."

The doctor explained.

Finn's condition had progressed faster than expected.

The procedure they'd hoped to schedule in several weeks now needed to happen much sooner.

Possibly within days.

Mave heard fragments.

Specialist.

Operating team.

Risk.

Timing.

Then the one subject she hated appeared.

Authorization and financial coordination.

"I need to know what it costs."

The doctor hesitated.

"Mave," Rafe said quietly.

She spun around.

"No."

He hadn't even offered yet.

"Don't."

Rafe nodded once.

"Okay."

The doctor continued.

Mave listened.

The number felt impossible.

Not merely large.

Impossible.

She had spent months applying for assistance.

Selling possessions.

Working overtime.

Calling foundations.

Borrowing against everything she owned.

And now there was no time left.

She entered Finn's room.

He looked tiny beneath the blankets.

His eyes opened.

"Hey."

Mave smiled too quickly.

"Hey, bug."

"Did I faint?"

"Maybe."

"That's embarrassing."

She sat beside him.

"Don't make jokes."

"Why?"

"Because I'm trying not to cry."

Finn considered.

"Then I should definitely make jokes."

Mave laughed despite herself.

He reached for her hand.

"Am I getting worse?"

She couldn't lie.

"Yes."

"Am I gonna die?"

Everything inside her broke.

But Mave had promised Finn years ago that scary questions deserved honest answers.

"Doctors are going to do everything they can."

"That's not what I asked."

She closed her eyes.

"No. I don't think you're going to die."

"Real promise?"

She swallowed.

"I can't promise."

Finn nodded.

Then squeezed her hand.

"Okay."

Mave looked at him.

"You're not scared?"

"I'm scared."

"You don't look scared."

"You always say brave doesn't mean not scared."

She laughed softly.

"Why do you remember everything I say?"

"Because you talk a lot."

She kissed his forehead.

Outside the room, Rafe stood with Sofia.

Sofia looked at him.

"Pay for it."

Rafe didn't respond.

"Rafe."

"She'll refuse."

"So?"

"I can't take away her dignity because I'm scared."

Sofia stared at him.

"When did you become emotionally intelligent?"

"Recently."

"Apparently."

Rafe watched Mave through the glass.

"There has to be another way."

There was.

By afternoon, his lawyers found it.

Finn qualified for an emergency charitable fund connected to a children's medical foundation Rafe's company had supported for years.

The fund had money available.

No personal debt.

No obligation to Rafe.

The board could approve it anonymously.

Rafe made one phone call.

Then another.

Three hours later, Mave sat across from the hospital financial coordinator.

"His procedure is covered."

She stared.

"What?"

"Through a private pediatric assistance fund."

"Which one?"

The woman gave the foundation's name.

Mave's eyes narrowed.

She knew Rafe donated to it.

She had seen his name on a plaque downstairs.

She found him in the hallway.

"Did you do this?"

"Do what?"

"Don't."

He met her gaze.

"I made a call."

"So you paid."

"No."

"You arranged it."

"I told them there was a child who qualified."

"Because of me."

"Because of Finn."

Mave looked furious.

Then exhausted.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain it."

She lowered her voice.

"My whole life, help has had conditions."

Rafe said nothing.

"My father helped when he wanted gratitude. Gerald gave extra shifts when he wanted me silent. Loan officers gave me five minutes because they wanted paperwork. Every favor comes with an invoice eventually."

Rafe looked at her.

"Not this one."

"How do I know?"

"Because I'm telling you."

She laughed bitterly.

"You're Rafe Colazo. Your entire reputation is built on debts."

He flinched more than she expected.

Mave immediately regretted it.

Rafe looked toward Finn's room.

"You're right."

She stared.

"My world is built on debts," he continued. "People owe favors. People remember who helped them and who hurt them. That's how my father lived. That's how I learned."

He looked back at her.

"But Finn doesn't owe me anything."

Mave's eyes filled.

"Neither do you."

She looked away.

Rafe continued softly.

"You saved Sofia because it was right. Not because you expected payment. Maybe I'm trying to learn how that works."

Mave didn't answer.

But she stopped arguing.

That evening Finn was scheduled for surgery in two days.

Rafe's investigation into Patrick continued.

The ledger revealed something darker.

Patrick had not been the mastermind.

He had been keeping records to protect himself from a larger group.

Among the names was Dominic Colazo.

Rafe's uncle.

A man supposedly killed in a boating accident twelve years earlier.

There was no body.

Only a burned vessel.

Rafe had been twenty-six at the time.

He'd inherited much of Dominic's influence afterward.

Now he understood why Patrick was terrified.

Dominic wasn't dead.

He'd disappeared.

And Patrick's records could expose him.

Late that night, Patrick called Mave.

She nearly didn't answer.

Rafe was sitting near the hospital window when her phone vibrated.

She saw the number.

Her face changed.

"Who?"

"My father."

"Put it on speaker."

"No."

"Mave."

She walked into the stairwell.

Rafe followed but stayed several feet away.

Mave answered.

"What?"

Patrick's breathing was heavy.

"You opened the case."

"Yes."

"You gave it to Colazo."

"Yes."

"You have no idea what you've done."

"Then tell me."

"Dominic is alive."

"I know."

Silence.

Patrick cursed softly.

"You need to take Finn and leave Boston."

"My brother is having heart surgery."

Patrick went quiet.

For the first time, he sounded like Finn's father.

"How bad?"

"Don't."

"Mave."

"You don't get to ask like you care."

"I do care."

"Where were you?"

Patrick didn't answer.

"Every hospital admission. Every birthday. Every time he asked about you. Where were you?"

"I couldn't come back."

"You chose not to."

Patrick's voice broke.

"It wasn't that simple."

"Then make it simple now."

Silence.

Finally he said, "Dominic thinks the records are with you."

"They aren't."

"He won't believe that."

"Then convince him."

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because he's coming for you."

Rafe stepped closer.

Mave's grip tightened around the phone.

"When?"

"I don't know."

"Where are you?"

Patrick hesitated.

Then gave an address.

Rafe immediately texted Mateo.

Patrick continued.

"I can give him something else."

"What?"

"Me."

Mave closed her eyes.

"No."

"Mave—"

"You do not get to disappear again and call it sacrifice."

Patrick began crying.

She hadn't heard her father cry since her mother died.

"I failed you."

"Yes."

"I know."

"You failed Finn."

"I know."

"And now you think getting yourself killed fixes that?"

"I don't know what else to do."

Mave pressed her forehead against the stairwell wall.

"Help Rafe expose him."

Patrick laughed bitterly.

"You think people like Dominic go to court?"

Mave looked toward Rafe.

"Maybe it's time they do."

Rafe held her gaze.

Patrick was silent.

Then he said, "Your mother used to say you were stronger than me."

Mave closed her eyes.

"She was right."

The call ended.

Rafe stared at her.

"You're shaking."

"I'm fine."

"No, you're not."

She looked at him.

For weeks she had refused help.

For years she had refused weakness.

Now, finally, she whispered:

"I'm scared."

Rafe stepped closer.

He didn't touch her immediately.

He waited.

Mave moved first.

She leaned into him.

His arms closed carefully around her, avoiding the injured shoulder.

For several seconds, Mave Donovan allowed somebody else to hold things together.

Then Rafe's phone rang.

Mateo.

Rafe answered.

"What?"

Mateo's voice came fast.

"We reached the address Patrick gave us."

"And?"

"He's gone."

Rafe's jaw tightened.

Mateo continued.

"But someone left something behind."

"What?"

"A photograph."

Rafe's eyes shifted to Mave.

Mateo said:

May you like

"It's Finn."
