Chapter 6 - Midnight in the House Where Our Marriage Died

We were moved to a secure federal facility outside Charleston before sunrise.
The twins believed it was a strange hotel.
Lena asked why every window was so thick.
Ash asked why Daddy’s arm was wrapped like a mummy.
Neither child understood that armed agents stood beyond the doors or that Damian Vale had nearly burned us alive.
Luca sat on the edge of Ash’s bed while our son traced the bandage around his forearm.
“Does it hurt?” Ash asked.
“A little.”
“Did the fire bite you?”
“Yes.”
Ash considered this.
“I don’t like fire.”
“Neither do I.”
“You saved my lion.”
Luca looked at the damaged wooden carving on the bedside table.
“I thought I was saving you.”
“You did both.”
Ash leaned against him.
Luca’s eyes closed.
I turned away because the tenderness between them felt too intimate to watch.
For three years, I had been everything to Lena and Ash—the person who fed them, protected them, comforted them, and answered questions I did not always know how to answer. I had convinced myself they did not need the man whose absence had shaped all of us.
Now I saw the truth.
They had survived without Luca.
That did not mean they felt nothing when they found him.
Agent Brooks questioned Vanessa in a room down the hall.
At first, Vanessa demanded an attorney.
Then she learned Damian had tried to kill her.
After that, she talked for six hours.
Damian had approached her shortly after Luca and I married. He fed her resentment, telling her that I had taken the future she deserved. He gave her money, designer clothes, and the illusion that she was finally more important than I was.
Vanessa helped him access the mansion.
She copied documents from Luca’s office.
She forged my signature.
She replaced my vitamins with medication intended to cause confusion and depression, hoping to create evidence that I was unstable.
But she had not planned my murder at first.
That idea came from Damian.
According to Agent Brooks, Vanessa eventually refused. Not because she loved me, but because she wanted me alive to know she had taken my place.
So they chose the staged affair.
“What happened after I ran?” I asked when Brooks finished.
“Vanessa expected Mr. Moretti to turn to her. He did the opposite.”
Luca stood by the window.
“I had her detained by security and questioned.”
“She convinced you she had also been drugged,” Brooks said.
“For twelve hours.”
“Then?”
“I found messages between her and Damian.”
His voice was flat.
“I removed her from the estate and froze every account she had access to.”
Vanessa had not spent three years living beside him.
She had spent three years hiding from the consequences of failing to possess him.
“What did Damian mean about ending the Moretti bloodline?” I asked.
Luca answered reluctantly.
“My father discovered Damian’s father stealing from our company twenty-five years ago. He turned him over to federal prosecutors.”
“What happened?”
“Damian’s father died in prison.”
“So this is revenge?”
“Partly. Damian also believes the company belongs to him because his father helped build it.”
Brooks opened another file.
“He has killed or intimidated several witnesses. The twins are valuable because they are Mr. Moretti’s legal heirs.”
“They aren’t listed as his children.”
“Damian may not know that.”
I looked toward Luca.
“What happens now?”
“We find him,” Brooks said.
“And until then?”
“You remain protected.”
I laughed without humor.
“We were protected at the farmhouse.”
Luca’s expression tightened.
Brooks did not argue.
Later that afternoon, I stood alone in the facility’s small courtyard. Concrete walls rose on every side, topped by cameras and razor wire. The sky was visible, but nothing beyond it.
Luca joined me.
His arm rested in a sling.
“You should be with the doctor.”
“I was released.”
“You ignore medical instructions now?”
“I have always ignored medical instructions.”
“I remember.”
The familiarity of the exchange frightened me.
For a moment, we sounded married.
He stood beside me without touching.
“I signed temporary custody documents,” he said.
I turned sharply.
“What documents?”
“They state that you have sole legal and physical custody. I will make no claim against you without your written agreement.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because you are afraid I will use the courts to take them.”
“You could.”
“Yes.”
His honesty cut deeper than reassurance.
“So I have removed that weapon from my hands.”
“What do you want in return?”
“Nothing.”
“Luca.”
“I want the opportunity to know them. But I won’t purchase that opportunity by frightening you.”
I studied his face.
“Three years ago, you would have ordered your attorneys to control everything.”
“Three years ago, I believed control could prevent loss.”
“And now?”
“Now I know it can create it.”
He handed me a folder.
Inside were signed legal documents witnessed by two federal attorneys. He had also established trusts for the twins that I alone would control until they turned twenty-five.
“This is too much money.”
“It is theirs.”
“They don’t need to grow up believing money makes them untouchable.”
“No child of yours will believe that.”
The compliment weakened a wall I had spent years building.
I closed the folder.
“I still don’t know how to forgive you.”
“I haven’t asked you to.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because forgiveness given under pressure is another form of surrender.”
I looked at him.
“Who taught you that?”
“Losing you.”
Before I could answer, an alarm sounded inside the facility.
Agents rushed through the hallway.
Luca moved in front of me automatically.
Agent Brooks appeared at the courtyard entrance.
“Vanessa collapsed during questioning.”
“What happened?” I asked.
“Poison.”
My blood turned cold.
“How could Damian poison her here?”
“He didn’t. The substance was concealed in a dental crown. She bit down on it.”
“Why?”
Brooks’s expression was grim.
“We don’t think she knew it was there.”
Vanessa was taken to the medical wing.
Doctors stabilized her, but she remained unconscious.
A scan revealed a small capsule installed beneath a false crown within the last month. Damian had apparently built a way to silence her remotely—or through pressure if she clenched her jaw.
While agents searched her belongings again, Lena and Ash played in the common room.
Luca sat on the carpet building a wooden train track.
Lena had decided he was terrible at curves.
“No, Daddy. It goes there.”
“I believe this section connects to the bridge.”
“You believe wrong.”
I covered a smile with my hand.
Ash handed Luca another piece.
“Here.”
“Thank you.”
Watching him with them made the lost years visible.
First steps he never saw.
Fevers he never sat through.
Birthday candles he did not help blow out.
He had missed those moments because of Vanessa and Damian.
But also because I had run without hearing him.
The truth was not simple enough to place all blame in one pair of hands.
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
You still leave doors unlocked when you’re distracted.
I looked toward the common-room entrance.
Empty.
Then the lights went out.
Emergency red lamps flickered on.
A recorded alarm announced a security breach.
Luca gathered both children.
“Stay behind me.”
A guard entered.
“This way. We’re evacuating the floor.”
Something about him felt wrong.
His uniform fit poorly at the shoulders.
His badge displayed no photograph.
Luca saw it at the same moment I did.
He shifted Lena behind him.
The false guard reached beneath his jacket.
Luca struck first.
He drove his uninjured shoulder into the man’s chest. They hit the wall. A handgun slid across the floor.
I grabbed it and kicked it beneath a cabinet.
The man punched Luca’s burned arm.
Luca collapsed to one knee.
Ash screamed.
The attacker reached for Lena.
I picked up a wooden chair and swung it into his side.
He turned toward me.
Before he could move, Ash pushed the train table with both hands.
It struck the attacker’s legs.
Luca rose and drove him to the floor.
Real agents stormed into the room.
They restrained the man.
Lena clung to my waist.
Ash ran to Luca.
“Daddy!”
Luca held him with one arm.
Agent Brooks pulled off the attacker’s cap.
It was not Damian.
It was one of his former employees.
“Where is Vale?” she demanded.
The man laughed through a split lip.
“Already where he needs to be.”
Brooks searched his pockets.
She found a key card from the medical wing.
We ran.
Vanessa’s hospital room was empty.
Her restraints had been cut.
A nurse lay unconscious near the elevator.
Security footage showed Damian Vale pushing Vanessa in a wheelchair through the underground parking area.
Before the cameras failed, Vanessa lifted her head.
She held a piece of paper against her chest.
Three words were written across it.
LAKE FOREST. MIDNIGHT.
Luca stared at the image.
“It’s a trap.”
I looked at the clock.
We had less than four hours.
“What is in Lake Forest?” I asked.
His face went pale.
May you like
“Everything Damian needs to destroy my family.”
