Chapter 3 - The Price of His Empire

By nightfall, freezing rain had begun to fall over Chicago.

Mateo stood in front of the mirror in his dressing room, wearing the same black suit from the gala.

Clara’s words returned to him.

You are becoming your father.

He had spent half his life running from Salvatore Falcone’s shadow while repeating the same lessons Salvatore had taught him. Never yield. Never apologize. Control everything. Love only what you can afford to lose.

Mateo had believed brutality made him strong.

Now his wife was missing because he had been too weak to place her needs above his pride.

Frank appeared in the doorway.

“The vehicles are ready.”

Mateo checked his watch. “Where is Peter?”

“Thaddeus moved him, his wife, and their children to a safe property in Wisconsin.”

“Does Peter know why?”

“He knows Clara was taken.”

Mateo nodded.

Frank remained in the doorway.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“The federal raid was larger than we believed. Agents copied records connecting the shipping operation to three of our companies.”

Mateo met his eyes.

“By tomorrow, they may have enough to issue warrants.”

“Then tomorrow they issue warrants.”

Frank looked surprised.

Two days earlier, Mateo would have mobilized judges, threatened witnesses, and destroyed records.

Now he barely reacted.

“What happens to the organization?” Frank asked.

Mateo fastened his coat.

“If Clara dies, there is no organization.”

“And if she lives?”

Mateo looked toward the empty bedroom.

“Then I make certain she never has to fear it again.”

At nine fifteen, Viktor’s men moved Clara from the office.

She had nearly cut through the plastic restraint when the door opened. She twisted her wrists to conceal the damaged section.

Two guards pulled her to her feet.

Her legs nearly collapsed beneath her.

They took her through a corridor and into the main body of the abandoned steel plant. Rusted beams rose toward a broken roof. Rainwater fell through gaps and struck the concrete floor.

A black sedan waited inside.

Viktor stood beside it.

“You will travel with us.”

“Where?”

“To meet your husband.”

Clara looked around.

Four men. Two vehicles. One open exit.

No safe path.

Viktor approached and placed a dark coat around her shoulders.

The gesture almost appeared kind.

“Do not misunderstand,” he said. “I cannot have you freezing before Mateo sees you.”

“You want him emotional.”

“I want him obedient.”

“He will never forgive you.”

Viktor smiled. “Forgiveness is irrelevant when a man is dead.”

Clara kept her face still.

Her suspicions were confirmed.

Viktor intended to kill Mateo.

They placed her in the rear of the sedan between two guards.

As the vehicle left the steel plant, Clara continued rubbing the weakened restraint against the metal buckle beneath the seat.

At ten forty-five, Mateo arrived alone at a deserted freight yard near the river.

He carried a leather case containing signed transfer documents and a sealed envelope with the supposed informant’s name.

A cold wind moved between stacked shipping containers.

Viktor’s instructions had been exact. No visible weapons. No guards. No tracking devices.

Mateo stepped into the center of the yard.

A floodlight switched on.

Viktor emerged from behind a container.

Two armed men followed.

The sedan carrying Clara rolled forward and stopped.

When the rear door opened, Mateo saw his wife.

Her hair was tangled. Her gown was stained. A bruise darkened one side of her face.

Something savage moved through him.

Clara looked at Mateo.

For one fragile moment, the freight yard disappeared.

She saw only the man who had once cooked dinner in a tiny apartment because they could not afford a restaurant. The man who had held her through the night after her mother died. The man who had promised never to make her afraid.

Then she remembered the armored door closing between them.

Viktor took her arm.

Mateo’s voice lowered. “Take your hand off my wife.”

“You are in no position to give orders.”

Mateo placed the leather case on the ground and pushed it forward with his shoe.

“The harbor, the warehouses, and the union accounts.”

Viktor gestured.

One of his men collected the case and checked the documents.

“And the informant?”

Mateo removed the envelope from inside his coat.

“Release Clara.”

“First the name.”

“You receive it when she reaches me.”

Viktor considered him.

Then he pushed Clara forward.

She walked slowly toward Mateo.

Ten yards.

Eight.

Six.

Mateo saw the restraints around her wrists.

He also saw her fingers moving.

Clara had nearly freed herself.

Viktor noticed Mateo looking.

His expression changed.

He grabbed Clara’s shoulder and pulled her backward.

At that instant, Clara tore one hand through the damaged restraint.

She drove her elbow into Viktor’s chest and dropped to the ground.

Mateo moved.

A shot struck the pavement near his feet.

Gunfire exploded from the darkness as Frank’s rescue team emerged from positions between the containers.

Viktor’s men scattered for cover.

Frank reached Clara first, covering her with his body as bullets struck the sedan.

Mateo crossed the open ground toward Viktor.

Thaddeus had been ordered to remain with Peter, but he appeared from behind a loading crane with two men.

“Get Clara out!” Mateo shouted.

Viktor fired toward him.

Mateo ducked behind a steel barrier.

The freight yard became a maze of echoes, headlights, and shouted orders.

Frank cut Clara’s remaining restraint.

“Can you run?”

“Where is Mateo?”

“He told me to get you out.”

“I am not leaving him.”

“Mrs. Falcone—”

A vehicle accelerated from the far side of the yard.

One of Viktor’s men was attempting to escape through the eastern gate.

Clara saw the driver raise a weapon toward Mateo’s exposed position.

“Mateo!”

Her scream cut through the noise.

Mateo turned and dropped behind the barrier as shots struck the metal above him.

Thaddeus fired at the vehicle’s tires.

The sedan lost control and collided with an empty container.

Viktor retreated toward the river.

Mateo followed.

They met near the edge of the dock.

Viktor swung first.

Mateo blocked the blow and drove him into a railing.

“You left her in the street,” Viktor said through gritted teeth. “Do not pretend I destroyed your marriage.”

Mateo struck him.

“You were right about one thing,” Viktor continued. “She saw what you are.”

Mateo froze for half a second.

Viktor reached toward his coat.

Clara appeared behind Mateo.

“He has a weapon!”

Mateo seized Viktor’s wrist.

They struggled near the water’s edge.

A distant siren approached.

Then another.

Federal agents and Chicago police vehicles entered the yard from both directions.

Thaddeus stared toward the lights.

“Who called them?”

Mateo had.

Before arriving, he had sent evidence of Viktor’s warehouses, financial accounts, and planned exchange to a federal contact. It was the first time Mateo Falcone had voluntarily invited law enforcement into his world.

Viktor realized it too.

“You brought the government here?”

Mateo forced the weapon from his hand.

“You wanted my empire.”

Mateo looked toward Clara.

“You can have what is left of it.”

Agents surrounded the dock.

Viktor was forced to his knees and handcuffed.

Mateo did not resist when weapons turned toward him.

Frank stepped forward. “Boss—”

Mateo raised one hand.

“It is over.”

Clara stared at him.

A federal agent approached. “Mateo Falcone, place your hands where we can see them.”

Mateo complied.

“Mateo,” Clara whispered.

He looked at her.

For the first time, there was no command in his face. No demand that she stand beside him. No expectation of loyalty.

Only regret.

“I am sorry,” he said.

An agent pulled his arms behind his back.

Clara took one step toward him.

“What did you do?”

“What I should have done years ago.”

“You surrendered?”

“I gave them the financial records and the locations of every weapons shipment.”

Thaddeus stared at him in disbelief.

Mateo continued, keeping his eyes on Clara.

“Peter’s name has been cleared. The evidence proves he reported the containers after discovering them. He will not be charged.”

Clara’s lips parted.

“You gave up everything?”

“No.”

Mateo looked at her as rain moved across his face.

“I still had one thing left to save.”

The agent led him away.

Clara stood beneath the floodlights as the most feared man in Chicago was placed inside a federal vehicle.

She had imagined Mateo choosing her over his empire.

She had never imagined it would happen after he had already shattered her trust.

Frank placed a blanket around her shoulders.

“Mrs. Falcone, we need to take you to a hospital.”

Clara watched the federal vehicle disappear.

The night before, Mateo had driven away and left her behind.

May you like

Now he was the one being taken into the darkness.

And despite everything he had done, Clara could not stop herself from whispering his name.
