Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering diamonds, expensive champagne, and ruthless ambition. Hundreds of investors, board members, and tech journalists mingled under the massive crystal chandeliers, eagerly awaiting the keynote speech. Aegis Security Solutions was about to land a billion-dollar government contract, and the air was thick with the scent of impending wealth.

From my vantage point in the darkened sound and lighting booth high above the ballroom floor, I watched the scene unfold like a silent movie. I was dressed in a simple black technician's uniform, a matching cap pulled low over my face. The real AV technician was currently locked in a supply closet on the second floor, peacefully sleeping off a mild sedative slipped into his coffee.

Down below, Daniel was holding court. He looked immaculate in a midnight-blue tuxedo, holding a glass of champagne, flashing his charismatic, practiced smile. Vanessa was right by his side, dripping in jewels that I recognized—they were bought with funds embezzled from my company. She played the part of the supportive partner flawlessly, accepting sympathetic nods from investors who believed Daniel’s tragic tale of his "unstable" wife.

"Audio check, Clara," Marcus's voice crackled softly in my earpiece. "The SEC filings are queued. Press contacts are standing by. Are you in position?"

"I'm locked in," I whispered, my fingers dancing across the massive mixing board. I had already bypassed the hotel's firewall and taken total control of the ballroom's two massive LED presentation screens and the master audio feed.

At exactly 8:00 PM, the lights in the ballroom dimmed. The crowd hushed, turning their attention to the main stage as a sweeping orchestral track played.

Daniel bounded onto the stage to rapturous applause. He approached the podium, gripping the edges with a look of feigned humility.

"Thank you," Daniel’s voice boomed through the speakers, deep and resonant. "Thank you all. It has been... a profoundly difficult week for me. As many of you know, I recently suffered an unimaginable personal tragedy." He paused, lowering his head, letting the silence hang heavy. "But I stand before you tonight because I know my children would want me to push forward. To build a safer world. That is what Aegis Security is all about."

The crowd murmured in sympathetic agreement. Vanessa, sitting in the front row, dabbed at her dry eyes with a tissue.

"Tonight, I am thrilled to announce that Aegis has officially partnered with the Department of Defense," Daniel continued, his voice rising in triumph. "We are ushering in a new era of security, built on absolute integrity and unbreakable trust!"

"Cue the integrity," I whispered to myself.

I hit the enter key on my laptop.

The Aegis logo on the massive screens behind Daniel suddenly flickered and died. A confused murmur rippled through the crowd. Daniel glanced over his shoulder, his smile faltering slightly, but he quickly recovered.

"It seems we have a slight technical—"

He was cut off as the screens flared back to life. But it wasn't a presentation slide. It was a high-definition video, recorded from the perspective of my black mourning brooch.

The image was towering, fifty feet tall. The chapel at the funeral. The white coffins in the background.

The ballroom fell deathly silent.

On the screen, my voice echoed from the speakers, raw and pleading. "Not here. Please, Daniel. Let them have peace."

Daniel’s massive face on the screen twisted into a sneer of pure malice. Then, the sound of the slap cracked through the ballroom's state-of-the-art surround sound system like a gunshot. The visual of my head snapping back made several people in the front row physically flinch.

Daniel froze at the podium, all the blood draining from his face. He stared at the screen in absolute horror.

Then came his whispered threat, amplified to deafening volumes: "Say another word, and you’ll die with them."

The crowd erupted. Shouts of shock, disgust, and confusion filled the air. Investors stood up, pointing at the stage. Journalists scrambled for their phones, frantically recording the screen.

"Turn it off!" Daniel bellowed, his polished facade shattering completely. He waved frantically at the AV booth. "Cut the feed! Security, get up there!"

Vanessa was frozen in her seat, her face pale, eyes wide with panic as the attendees around her backed away as if she were contagious.

I wasn't done.

I switched the feed. The video disappeared, replaced by a stark, black-and-white spreadsheet. It was the financial ledger Marcus had compiled. Red highlights clearly showed millions of dollars being funneled from Aegis’s R&D accounts into offshore shell companies owned by Daniel and Vanessa.

"Marcus, drop the filings," I said into my comms.

"Done. It's live on Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal," Marcus confirmed. "Stock is going to tank the second the bell rings tomorrow."

Down on the floor, phones began to buzz and chime in unison. The journalists were getting the breaking news alerts.

"He's embezzling!" someone yelled from the back of the room. "The DoD contract is fraudulent!"

Security guards were finally rushing down the aisles, heading for the stage to escort Daniel away from the mob of furious investors. Daniel looked like a cornered animal, his eyes darting wildly. He grabbed Vanessa's arm, yanking her out of her seat with brutal force, and dragged her toward the rear exit.

I calmly shut down my laptop, packed it into my backpack, and slipped out the side door of the AV booth. I walked down the back stairwell, blending in perfectly with the chaos of the catering staff rushing to see what the commotion was.

As I stepped out into the cool night air of the alleyway behind the hotel, I took a deep breath. Phase one was complete. Daniel's reputation was in shreds, his company was in freefall, and his investors were calling for his head.

But I still hadn't shown them the audio of the murder. That was for later. I wanted him to scramble. I wanted him to feel the walls closing in, just like Emma and Ethan had.
