Chapter 5 - The Empire Built on a Lie

Daniel arrived the following morning.

He carried two briefcases.

He looked older than Rebecca remembered.

But his eyes were sharp.

He greeted David.

Then Marcus.

Finally, he looked at Rebecca.

“Your grandfather trusted very few people.”

Rebecca swallowed.

“Did he trust my father?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Once.”

“And Julian?”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

Rebecca felt a chill.

“Why?”

“Your grandfather noticed something about Julian.”

“What?”

“Ambition.”

“That isn't a crime.”

“No.”

Daniel placed a folder on the table.

“But ambition combined with deception can become dangerous.”

He opened the folder.

Inside were documents dating back nearly eight years.

Julian had been involved with people connected to the family before Rebecca met him.

Not directly.

Through introductions.

Business contacts.

Real-estate intermediaries.

Daniel explained that Julian had gradually positioned himself near people who controlled company assets.

Then Rebecca appeared.

The granddaughter.

The heir.

The woman who controlled voting rights.

Rebecca stared at the records.

“So the marriage…”

“Was likely part of a broader strategy.”

Her throat tightened.

Daniel looked at her.

“I am sorry.”

Rebecca looked away.

She had spent years thinking her marriage had failed because her husband cheated.

Now she realized the betrayal had started long before the affair.

The affair was only the moment she finally saw it.

Daniel continued.

“Your grandfather established the second trust because he feared exactly this.”

“What does it control?”

“Enough shares to prevent anyone from taking control of Vance & Sterling without your consent.”

Rebecca stared at him.

“And the missing money?”

Daniel opened the second briefcase.

“The trust also has access to historical records.”

He placed several documents on the table.

“These are copies of transactions your grandfather suspected were fraudulent.”

Rebecca looked at the names.

Her father.

Her uncle.

Julian.

Several shell companies.

The dates stretched back years.

She felt sick.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because your grandfather instructed me not to until you reached a specific point.”

“What point?”

“Until someone tried to take your voting rights.”

Rebecca thought of the draft agreement in Julian's safe.

She understood.

“My grandfather knew.”

Daniel nodded.

“He feared someone would manipulate you.”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

The betrayal was almost too large to process.

She had married Julian believing he loved her.

Her family had treated her like an asset.

And her grandfather had apparently known enough to build a safety net around her.

“What happens now?”

Daniel answered calmly.

“We protect your assets.”

“And Julian?”

“That depends on the evidence.”

David stepped forward.

“We have plenty.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Then we proceed carefully.”

The next few hours were spent organizing evidence.

Bank statements.

Corporate records.

Photographs.

Emails.

The notebook.

The hidden agreements.

The recordings.

Every piece fit another piece.

By evening, the story was clear.

Julian had been working with several people connected to the family.

The plan was simple.

Marry Rebecca.

Gain her trust.

Convince her to transfer voting control.

Then use company assets to cover existing debts and redirect remaining funds.

When the company collapsed, they would blame market conditions.

Rebecca would be left with nothing.

The affair with Clarissa had not been part of the original plan.

It had been reckless.

Careless.

And devastating.

But it had also exposed Julian.

Marcus listened to the entire explanation.

Then he stood.

“I want to cooperate.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Are you certain?”

Marcus nodded.

“Clarissa destroyed my marriage.”

He swallowed.

“But I won't let Julian destroy Rebecca's life too.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“Thank you.”

That night, Rebecca received a call.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

Julian's voice.

“Rebecca.”

Her entire body stiffened.

“What do you want?”

“I want to explain.”

“No.”

“Please.”

“You had years.”

“I made mistakes.”

“You made plans.”

Silence.

Rebecca continued.

“You married me for my shares.”

“That's not true.”

“I have your notebook.”

Julian stopped breathing.

Then:

“You broke into my safe.”

“You gave me the combination.”

“I didn't know what you were looking for.”

“You were terrified.”

His voice became colder.

“Where are the documents?”

Rebecca smiled.

“Why?”

“Because you don't understand what you've gotten yourself into.”

“Then explain.”

“You think my family is the problem?”

Rebecca said nothing.

Julian whispered:

“Your own family is involved.”

Rebecca's heart stopped.

“What?”

“Your father knows.”

“Knows what?”

“He knows everything.”

She gripped the phone.

“Why would you tell me that?”

“Because if you think I'm the only one who betrayed you, you're wrong.”

The line went dead.

Rebecca stared at the phone.

Daniel had heard the conversation.

“What did he say?”

Rebecca looked up.

“He said my father knows.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Then we need to move quickly.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at the locked safe.

“Because if your father knows about the trust…”

He paused.

May you like

“He may try to destroy the evidence before we can use it.”
